Proposed MOT changes (May 18)

Featured Replies

I don't know if it's currently in the rules, but just noticed this on page 55 about HIDs.

Some vehicles may be fitted with High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps. It is not permitted to convert existing halogen headlamp units for use with HID bulbs. If it is clear that such a conversion has been carried out, rather than replacing the entire unit with one designed and approved for use with HID bulbs, the headlamp should be rejected.

So HID kits will fail an MOT. It does mention levelling and washers, but only fail if fitted and not working.

So the First MOT at 4 years from first registration in the UK has been scrapped.

Safety concerns.  Well they or was that George Osborne and other muppets were told that right after he announced it.

Thank flipping god for that...however they do say that it would have brought us into line with Northern Ireland, France & other Eu countries....

Just because they do don't make it right...

I know the mechanics at my VW garage & you ought to hear the stories of cars that fail the first MOT....long service intervals & people who think they don't have to do anything as all "work"  (they think) is covered under the service package they bought.......

My 2011 XJ I've just bought smokes..and it has a DPF (I know because it was full when I bought it!!) So now I'm worried as apparently there can be zero smoke produced!

'Apparently',  So time will tell,

Zero is a very very low thing,  ie like absolutely no smoke.

Do you think there are Euro 5 ICE's that have ZERO Smoke?

Couldn't agree more.

Run a tin of BG244 through the car. An old Mondeo of mine only just passed it smoke test on the third attempt at 2.94 with the limit at 3.00. Ran a can of BG244 through it annually and at the next MOT it when down to 0.16 then 0.14 where it stayed until I sold it.

8.2.1.1 (a) Emission control equipment fitted by the manufacturer: missing, obviously modified or obviously defective.

So this means anyone with a straight through on the older diesels instead of an EGR is now presumably stuffed (as are those with an EGR blank)?

So when is the UK Government / DfT / DVSA going to see that a Professional examining a vehicle for 45-60 minutes in a Building the have to pay for with equipment they provide, insure etc is going to get an hourly rate more than just 50% of some charge for doing 'Servicing or diagnostics work'.

http://gov.uk/getting-an-mot/mot-test-fees

Even if a MOT test station charges the maximum 'rates' set they are not getting much, those taking £25-£30 for a test fee really are a bargain.

Time will tell just what differences the DVSA / DfT to have happening around the UK.

It looks like the DVSA are no longer going to be employing Monkeys to check for an visible smoke of any colour emitted from the exhaust of diesel vehicles fitted with a Diesel Particulate Filter & they ruled out using Pandas.

There is now an opportunity for reducing unemployment among young school leavers by employing them to sit at the back of vehicles being tested and observing any smoke emitted.

Equal opportunity employers.
