Gearbox noise 1.2 HTP

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a Skoda Fabia HTP 1.2 2009 that have some really bad noise from the gearbox when the clutch is engaged. When the clutch is pressed the noise disappear.

See attached video. I suspect the gearbox input shaft bearing. Does anyone have another idea?

Thanks in advance

Probably clutch release bearing, though I've never heard one as bad as that, rather they tend to rattle or squeak when the clutch is released.

Could also be springs or bits broken on the clutch friction plate I suppose.

Worst case is a gearbox bearing on the input shaft has collapsed.

Gearbox off and new clutch kit to start with.

Thanks for answer. Isn’t the clutch release bearing bad when a noise sounds when clutch is pressed (pedal down)? This noise is when the clutch are engaged (pedal up).

Anyway it just to start to get the gearbox off. Haven’t done this on a Fabia before but it seems to be quite straightforward.

No usually clutch release bearing noise happens when the bearing isnt under load and the bearing cage and balls rattle around worn loose and dry.

From the sound though I suspect something failed on the friction plate (springs, rivets)

I have removed the gearbox and unfortunately it seems to be some bearing inside the gearbox. See video below.

Just an update if someone else is experience the same noise in the gearbox.

It was the input shaft bearing that had failed completely. I replaced all the bearings and seals inside the gearbox and now it works fine!

I also took the opportunity to change the clutch when the gearbox was off.

Hello. I have the same problem (3  years). Can you put here a picture with the shaft bearing that failed?

The bearings with the blue seal on picture 1 above was the one that failed.

On picture 2 you can see the bearings half way off the gearbox shafts during disassembling.

Is there any way to replace the gearbox bearing without a hydraulic press?

It’s possible. I used a puller to remove the bearings from the gearbox shafts. Before mounting I put the gearbox shafts in the freezer for several hours. I also carefully(!) heated the bearings. Then it was no problem to mount, only took some gently knocks with a rubber hammer.

Thanks for the information, recently I have noticed my gearbox is starting to make a whining sound especially in 1st and 2nd gear so I may also have to change the bearings in the near future.

Hi, Just bought the same model of car (Fabia 1.2 HTP) and I am experiencing a similar noise although not as severe. Experience made me think it would be a Thrust bearing, however, my Garage reckons its the Gearbox. I get the noise when the car is sitting in neutral and it goes away when I press the clutch, it is less noticeable when driving. I am about to get the Garage to take out the box, any thoughts on the likely cost of changing the Main Shaft Bearing etc, obviously I would already be changing the Clutch while in there. Also, ''Mobility'' does make it sound like its a simple job, is it?

any advice is greatly appreciated.

Cheers
