Stage 1 remap or tuning box thingy, impact on insurance ?

Featured Replies

Just wondered, not sure I really want to go down this route and wondering about the insurance loading.

The insurance quote at renewal with all my driving experience years and NCB and pretty clear history was around the £200 mark !

I could wait until October for querying at renewal time - Currently with esure and with 3/4 of the policy left to run,

but I know what will happen is I will either forget to ask our just chicken out of getting it done, because car comparison sites give a really good price which seems far more important at the time :D

So just wondered if others had experience of impact it would have before doing it ?

Its not necessarily the most important thing for me, so I think I could live without it but equally just wondered anyway as if its gives a bit better economy and throttle response why not find out hence just wondered. I definitely would not do what some do and just "fit it any pray"

Equally though I don't want to call and have them flag me up for some reason for only asking about something not fitted.

Am I better to just query a theoretical quote with someone like Chris Knott even if I wait until renewal in October to go ahead with it ?

( i was thinking on information available that remap is better than a box from what I've seen too).

So in summary, how much did you insurance actually go up by for a stage 1 remap or box ? ( particularly for petrol but I suppose any information is useful)

Oh I and I almost forgot, I wonder rather than going that way before getting anything done are there any events people go to ( with a stage 1) you could actually see the difference against a standard car - or maybe is there a video on youtube of a non mapped mk3 vs stage 1 demonstrated or something ?

I had a DTUK box on my 150ps diesel L&K, and the extra insurance was something like £45.

A Shark stage 1 to 280/290bhp wouldn’t affect my premium according to my broker.

Take my word for it, a Shark stage 1 map transforms the car, I had it done 5 Dec. Very smooth build up of power, just as economical. In short, lots more torque and relentless acceleration. 3rd gear feels like 2nd, 4th like 3rd etc. Overtakes are even safer.  Just passed 1st MOT yesterday no problems. Warranty was running out and my insurance renewal quote had risen from £190 to £240, so thought bugger it, I would think about a remap and pay a bit more. £360 with Sky and I am sure you can get it cheaper. My only regret is not doing this sooner.

Do any of you guys running the maps have business coverage + an above average mileage on your policies?

I haven't tried anyone specialist for a quote, but most mainstream insurers either say no if I mention a remap, or double the quote!

Mine would be below average mileage so neither business nor miles is an issue !

25 years old, 3 NCB (no requirement for a car until 22) £100 difference to have a map for me, I'd have a map over a box.

i'd talk to your insurance company. They'll be able to advise you accordingly.

Which is why you need you speak to Sky or a specialist broker if you're getting ridiculous quotes. I am guessing that your insurance is quite reasonable at the moment. If it goes up by £3-4 per week it has to be worth it. Prior to the map I was looking at Golf R and similar. Still happy and impressed so theoretically it's saved me money.

Yeah I'm with AXA at the moment who are pretty much "no mods", but what I pay is quite reasonable. I'm up for renewal in a couple of months so might try one of the specialists to see how much the difference would be.

Yeah I think I might give them a call as the alternative is just having to wait out a year like I did last year but just to then not bother doing anything because doing nothing about it is just too easy :D

Does anyone know if esure are relatively friendly to something like this ? I'm pretty much happy with everything else about the car so this isn't going to start making me itch for other changes all around the car necessarily....so even if its just getting that done only I'm quite happy.

Not looking to modify the crap out the car, I think its a very good car generally all round. a few more squeaks and creaks in some places strangely developed compared to my 10 yr old Fabia but I guess they just don't make em like they used to !

Yeah my insurance was through Direct Line, 15k a year and for business use. Policy was just a shade under £400 with the box declared. (I’m 31 with full no claims).

Thanks for that, I'm not too dissimilar in age and no claims, but I guess there are other factors too; job, postcode.

Will bear direct line in mind next time, thanks :)

Thanks but last time I went to Flux to sort of introduce myself to you and you ramped up my renewal to £400 when the comparisons sites are circa £200.

That car has been put back standard now ( all I had was lowering springs, splitter and 17 spiders) as I still like to use it / run into the ground, but not looking to waste all my money on insurance as the Octy trumped the Fabia as my newer/better car.

Can't be arsed life is too short, sorry.
