Are there any high mileage 1.4tsi mk3s out there?

Featured Replies

Our car is only 3.5 years old with just 40k km on the clock and performing better than ever so there is no real reason to change it.

While there have been no real issues reported in this forum with this petrol model it is obvious most UK road warriors preferred  goto option is a diesel and the 1.4tsi petrol mostly adopted by those whose driving pattern does not suit a diesel.

So are there any high mileage uses out there who can give me some peace of mind regarding their reliability over the longer distance?

As an aside we did a 60km run to a charity fundraiser in a country town one evening last week, although a fair amount of traffic it flowed well in town and we only caught a few lights. Out of town on the country roads we were restricted to the legal limit of 100kph. Long story short we got an indicated average 4.4L/100 (64 mpg) there and repeated it on the way back. Take that claim with the usual fist full of salt but the OBC is fairly accurate on the tank average claims around the usual mid 5's to 6L/100 mark.

With 30 degree temps and the aircon only lightly loaded that still seemed unusually good, and I cannot think of any factors that may have influenced it to that degree.

Difficult to imagine that downsizing would give us much better returns.

Poor gramma

Gerry mine had 43k miles on it when it went back & I think you'd agree, my miles counted double.

It drove as nicely on its last drive as its first & never gave me a non tuning problem, I reckon you'll be fine with that car for another 3-1/2 years

Mines just turned 4yrs old and has 95k kms on the odometer  (so not that hight of a mileage) and still running like a champ.

There's some occasional ticking on cold mornings from the valves area (going away as the engine warms up), and also a bit of raspiness from the engine under load, but it was like this since I have the car. I'm still happy with it.

Fuel mileage: We've visited the in-laws during the holidays (600km trip with a mountain range to cross mid-way). Going there I chose the shortest option (2-lane countryside roads and crossing the mountains), indicated fuel avg. was 4.8L/100km (driving slightly above the 90-100 legal limit). On the way back we took the motorway which is longer but avoids the mountains (limit: 130km/h, 700km of flat terrain) and the fuel avg was 7.0L/100km. Was a bit surprising (both ways fueled at a reputable chain's station), but still not a bad number (and well, at many stretches I allowed myself the luxury of exceeding the speed limit by less than 10% - above this the police starts to pay attention).

Also, at 130km/h GPS indicated speed the clock shows nearly 150...

Just ordered the 1.4 in a Touran so happy to read this feedback! Although the touran is a little heavier.

Double on driving style alone and triple 'cos your one was on 'roids.

I notice you have not updated your Fuelly signature to the 245 :)

Good consumption even at the higher speeds.

The only place in Australia where you can officially do 130 kph is in the Northern Territories.

Single lane highways , B-doubles and triples and grey nomads (pensioners with caravans) to cope with though.

Err yeah I'm having trouble updating the fuelly signature Gerry but, after 4,800 miles we are averaging about 23mpg which does include some long trips.

Not bad considering its closing on 300bhp with a few mild mods.

Much better than I thought you would get, or more accurately, nowhere near as bad as I feared :)
