What have you broken on your car while tinkering?

Featured Replies

It seems I can't do anything to my car without breaking something, or something happening that I didn't want to happen :o

For example, fitting the speakers at the weekend, dropped the drilled out rivets in the bottom of the door, and they aren't retievable without removing the labour intensive inner door panels  Also, waving the crimper about, chipped the paint on the leading edge of the door.

Hoovering the car out today, and scuffed the side of the centre console near the heater controls

Doing wiring around the battery, I've broken 2 battery covers now.

Fitting my satnav, managed to smash the power lead in the door shattering the plug. The cable isn't available separately so its rendered useless. :thumbdwn:

Not on this car, but old ones, I've broken door hinges, sheered caliper bolts and jacked the car up from the floor and dented it proper...

So what mishaps have you had whilst tinkering?

Not so many on MY car ;)

I've done exactly that, too! Mine's held together with superglue and PVC tape, and actually still works fine! :P

Have broken loads of the clips holding the door cards in place in my many attempts to stop them rattling, and managed to tear the fabric a bit last time round (although it's the bit you can't see when the door's shut, so not too fussed!

Bit unlucky is fair to say

You may be able to sort the satnav IF the plug is basically just the standard 12V connection rather than having something fancy within it. I'd try to check out if it can be wired in direct (via a fuse/switch preferred).

Mishaps so far - trying to change speakers to find previous owner had glued the door panels on - gave up (different car).

Furby wise loosing one of the clips that holds the bumper on, as well as not tightening a clip causing a little smoke + having to drop bumper etc off again to refit the pipework, then vagcom to clear it again (been fine since :D )

So far not had too much go wrong with the Furb but due to the amount of modding 'in progress' there is plenty of opportunity to catch up :P

PS as for the door clips, you can buy them from the dealer at not too much expense, I ordered a bunch of them so when we have another 'session' we can have a go at fitting the sound proofing in the door panels :D

What HAVEN'T I broken? :D

My battery box is dodgy

Front right bumper grill is well botched and dodgy

Rear heater switch is now "wobbly"

Handles on two door cards won't clip down

Various bits of trim are snapped/cut/loose

Thats about all that springs to mind. Thank god the engine is fine. I can't seem to break that.

Managed to burst a large turbo levering it into place, trying to save time fitting the turbo and manifold at the same time.

Also lots of the stupid covers on the roof.

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

Didn't damage anything too much on mine, so I'm happy atleast! ;)

Another to add to the list is the snapped centre console wrap around trim...

Over the summer it will be returned to back as Skoda intended (+its improvements, of course  )

Can I claim some of the glory for that one :D :P

Does taking a stanley knife to anything count? It seems to be an essential element of most furby mods - and I have officially broken bits on mine, for the greater good, and I broke a bit on Xav's too - for the greater good of the FMIC install. :D

I broke my battery cover trying to remove it to give swmbo a jump start at the weekend.

Only need to remove one word! Come on. :P :D

I need a vRS battery box complete. Wonder how much that will be. :(

Snapped a spark plug in the head.Had to took head off the remove it,didn't have cyclinder head gasket,so put head back on until i could get one next day.Drove it next day to go and get gasket.

That was when cars were simple to work on and only took an hour to strip the head and rebuild the dam thing.

While trying to fit an air freshener through the center AC vents two years ago, I pushed a bit to hard and broke one of the fins....

Whole thing had to replaced, and it's the little things of the car that are bloody expensive...lucky for me though, got it replaced FOC as a favor :o

The clips on the plugs connected to the coil packs - think I broke 2 of those.

My Mrs dropped a small allen key into the dash after fitting the alloy tax holder. I went indoors to find another key and came out to find her acting very sheepish!

Hi to All

Ashamed to say that apart from the occasional sheared bolt head when something has siezed in, I have managed not to break anything when working on my own cars and bikes. Obviously not trying hard enough.

Having said that, did kick a car off the jack in a fit of rage and droped it onto my foot (front disc) which resulted in a broken foot and a lot of swearing. Broke a finger and a knuckle when a bolt let go unexpectedly as well. Cheaper than fixing the car though.

Chris

Air vent fins - put my hand through it while attempting to bump-start the Octy towards the end of my custodianship.....

Electric mirror **** - emerged from car (after assisting installing new stereo) and closed the door in one super-fluid movement, only to catch the damn thing and see it roll down the street post-haste........

flap over the diagnostic port - don't know to this day ahere that went, though suspect the garage misplaced it.....

Now, armed with a haynes Manual, I can cause some serious damage.......
