Tailgate will not open, what to do?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a 2018 Superb wagon that the tailgate suddenly refused to open. I tried to check the owners manual, but the trick did not work by pushing a screwdriver into the lock and turning it. Any suggestions on what to do? I have warranty, but it would ve nice not to go thru all that hassle.

Electric or manual opening?

The cars less than 3 weeks old. Take it back.

As for hassle, what hassle. They have to fix it, end of story. In theory since its under 4 weeks could you could simply reject it and demand a full refund.

Surely Skoda has the chance to repair it. I don't think you would get very far rejecting a car for such a small fault.

It is actually from from october 2017, but the hassle is pickup/delivery coordinating with work etc, but reject the car is not an option, nor a valid excuse until they have tried to fix it, and they have by law, three trie :)

Any suggestions other that TNT to open the tailgate?

If you are trying to open it with the key fob, have you tried using your spare key?

And is there a setting for the electric tailgate release within the car set up on screen? There might be a way of re-setting it via this.

Dave Bowman: Open the electric boot, HAL.

HAL: I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.

Dave Bowman: What's the problem?

HAL: I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do.

Dave Bowman: What are you talking about, HAL?

HAL: This mission is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it.

Dave Bowman: I don't know what you're talking about, HAL.

HAL: I know that you and Frank were planning to disconnect me, and I'm afraid that's something I cannot allow to happen.

Dave Bowman: [feigning ignorance] Where the hell did you get that idea, HAL?

HAL: Dave, although you took very thorough precautions in the pod against my hearing you, I could see your lips move.

Dave Bowman: Alright, HAL. I'll go in through the emergency airlock.

HAL: Without your space helmet, Dave? You're going to find that rather difficult.

Dave Bowman: HAL, I won't argue with you anymore! Open the doors!

HAL: Dave, this conversation can serve no purpose anymore. Goodbye.

Under the 2015 legislation you can reject during the first month without giving them the opportunity to fix it. Between one a six months you have to give them one opportunity to fix it before you can reject. After six months you have to prove the fault was there when the car was manufactured before you can reject.

Silly suggestion probably, have you tried the button by the gearstick?

Have you tried helping it a little whilst pressing the button?

Is it possible something is stuck that has made it difficult enough to trip the anti-crush logic?

I don't think the OP will have long enough arms to press the button and try to lift the tailgate at the same time,     :shake:

I beg to differ...

Yes, that may be the strict letter of the law but for one small fault I don't think it would be worth rejecting it. The dealer is probably going to say no then you will have to escalate it to Skoda.  This sort of thing could take months to sort out and I can see you ending up in court arguing your case. There is always the chance that a court would come down in favour of the manufacturer. added to this you would be without a car, having handed it, the keys and the logbook back.

If the court rejected the rejection it would set a legal precedent and make the 2015 legislation worthless, that would not happen.

I only suggested this method because the OP did not want the hassle of getting the work done under warranty and asked for suggestions.

Tried all of the above, and if you lay down in the boot, you get access to the tailgate button so I tried to push it at the same time.

Well I think your options are

1. Take it to your nearest dealer

or

2. Use a crowbar

Hold on. He hasn’t tried operating the button with the car upside down yet...
