Side to side shaking on acceleration (?)

Featured Replies

Hi all..

Hit a pothole today in my standard Fabia Bohemia estate 1.9.  Straight away experienced some shaking when accelerating.  Couldn’t find anything wrong so carried on, seemed to get a little worse so pulled into a garage and got the tracking and balancing done.  They couldn’t see anything obviously wrong.

Anyway that didn’t fix it and it only got worse so I pulled over to get recovered as there’s nothing else I can do..

Anyone have any ideas?  It’s a side to side shake, seems to be coming from the front.  Only when accelerating, goes when clutch down.  Engine revs fine on its own.  Heard some clicking when driving up a hill that sounded gearboxy.

135,000 miles, well serviced every 6k. Front discs, pads and tyres due replacement in near future.

no advisories last MOT.

thanks in advance!

Did the garage cast their eyes over your front springs ? just a thought.

Just got it up on jacks and had a look myself, they all seem ok.  Drivers side (long) driveshaft seems very wobbly at inner end, so assume cvj has gone.  Could this be the cause?

I imagine if it is binding up in a certain position the torque to either wheel will vary per rotation and cause a wobble/shake effect? If that makes sense!  Hopefully..

I'd take a good guess that it is your CV Joints. I've been chasing the same problem and it led to the CV Joints. And since you've mentioned one has bad play, kind of makes sense. Get it changed. I opted to just buy some new driveshafts and swap them over, much quicker than messing changing the CV Joint's. Costs a little more but the time saved is worth it in my opinion.

@awhapshott - The above are possible, but also is the balance weight on the long shaft still firmly attached?

Thanks all, much appreciated.  Not sure, but just buying a complete new drive shaft so will fit it and see if it’s happier.

Fingers crossed i’ll make it to work tomorrow.. Although probably a long night ahead.

thanks again, will let you know how it goes!

You may have torn a console bush when you hit the pothole which would also explain it.

Fixed.  Inner cvj had failed (badly enough to deform the cover plate!) changed out driveshaft this evening for another (number 3?!)  and now all running perfect!

Thanks for the help/advice!
