2015 Black Edition which DSG?

Featured Replies

I'm looking at a Yeti black edition (4x4, 140CR, DSG).  Does anyone know which of the DSG boxes this has?  I just want to make sure it's one of the wet clutch ones. Presumably it's not the 7 speed dry clutch from the 1.2 TSI due to the higher torque of the diesel, but just want to be sure.

Thanks!

6 speed wet DSG. Only the 1.2 petrol got the 7 speed dry DSG.

I have had 2 1.2 DSG's without fault.

Contrary to popular belief, the 6sp wet clutch DSG is by no means bullet-proof.....

But neither are the  conventional clutches and DMFs fitted to manual transmissions!

Nothing is bullet proof, but clutches last say 80k and it seems the manual clutch DMF has been failing at the same or lower mileage. No doubt some wet clutch dsg's will fail early, as can happen to any component if you are unlucky.

Dry clutch dsg's suffer wear every time the car moves away and changes gear via friction between plates moving at different speeds. I gather if looked after they last about twice as long as a manual clutch, but then cost twice as much to replace so 160k if you are lucky. If used incorrectly such as sitting in drive with the handbrake on, which I have seen a Skoda employed courtesy driver do when giving me a lift, they will fail much sooner. (My son bought a ford focus with their version of the dry clutch dsg and found the second gear clutch was worn out at 20k miles due to misuse by the previous driver! Selling main Ford dealer had to repair it under warranty)

Wet clutches transmit power by shear in a fluid as the plates come together. By the time they touch they should both be travelling at the same speed so virtually no wear will result. As long as the fluid is replaced regularly the life expectancy of the clutch should exceed that of the rest of the car in normal ownership. If you search on the web there are claims of taxis exceeding 550k miles on the wet clutch dsg with no gearbox related issues. And taxis probably are most likely to abuse the clutch in constant city driving.

I wanted to get an automatic for my current car as I have never owned one before and have got sick of changing gear when stuck in traffic jams. However after a lot of reading and research I personally would not consider buying the dry clutch variant. The wet clutch dsg has a lot more in reserve for abuse. The dry clutch is limited to vehicles below a certain power output, yet there is a tuned Superb on this forum with over 550bhp going through the wet clutch dsg. From memory apart from software upgrade to handle the extra power without slipping the clutch, it was stock. He did change to a racing clutch pack later for better response on a drag strip though.

Improve the chance of being Bullet Proof if you follow the Servicing & Maintenance Schedule of an Oil Change at 40,000 miles with a Wet Clutch 6 DSG)

(or 7 speed wet DSG which was not fitted to Yeti's).

If left to 62,000 miles there might well be issues / failures.  As i think someone might point out.

That was my last Yeti which I would have kept except for the fact that I do very little mileage now. Excellent car!

There was a service recall to verify the type of oil in the gearbox when I had mine. Something about the wrong type having been put in at the factory in some cases and potentially causing an electrical short and loss of drive. I can't remember the exact details.

^^^

But that was on DQ200 7 Speed Twin Dry Clutch DSG's.   So nothing to do with a 6 Speed Wet Clutch DSG.

& it was a Service Campaign in the UK / Europe, only a World Wide Recall in the rest of the World.

Change Synthetic Mineral Oil for Mineral & a Software Update. '34F7'.

(Since Nov 2017 there is another service campaign on some 2013-2015 DQ200, '34H5' a software update'.

Ahh.. my imperfect memory :blush.  All I know for sure is that I had a 2014 Black Edition Yeti which I liked. Perhaps it was the Fabia I had very briefly before it that that I'm rambling on about.

It was the DSG box I was referring to - not the clutch per se.
