I was a member here  long time ago but forgot my password.

 

Few years ago I got seriously ill (now better) and could not drive my VRS so it has been sorn'd ever since as don't really need as walk to work. Standing idle for so long the fuel pump seized so replaced few years ago and that has now seized again for lack of use. Battery dead and wants replacing and rear calipers also seized up. Had to remove  calipers to move vehicle so likely needs rear caliper, discs, pads etc. My partner wants a new 'sensible' car so she has suggested it has to go. The vehicle has only just under 20,000 original miles with a few dents and dings arising from just sitting on drive and in garage!!! The car has a mint interior.

 

 Question is, what's it worth due to exceptionally low mileage but needing some TLC or is it worth more breaking it?

With low mileage its worth more than a highly modified and high mileage one, but as it requires a fair bit of work doing to it to get it road worthy unfortunately its not worth much more than around £700. As it only has very low miles on it, it would be a real shame to see it broken for parts, as there are not many standard low mileage examples left. It really depends on how much you want back from it?

This is just my opinion and as there's no photos of it, it is difficult to give a good estimate of price.

Thanks for your response. £700 I would definately break it. If I get chance if it stops bloody raining here in S Wales will take some pictures of it if anybody interested. Would be nice to see it go to a true enthusiast and bring it back to factory condition.

I'm in South Wales too. I'd love to put one back to factory condition, but not got much in the way of funds for that.

You might need to put a few hundred quid into in but it will be worth it for what you get back.  If it was me and I had a 20,000 mile 12+ year old car I would repair it, get it detailed and put it up for sale.  I wouldn't dream of breaking something like that.  It's not like any of the jobs are big time consuming things to sort. 

 

Dent man -£50-100

Rear calipers, discs and pads £200ish

Detailed £50-100

 

No brainer if you ask me

I also think it's worth putting a bit of effort in to getting it running again. The rear calipers might just need winding in and out a few times and a clean up, rather than needing replacement.

 

A couple of other things to factor in:

Cambelt might be due

Brake fluid should be replaced

Tyres might be cracking or damaged from the car not moving in so long.

I am well aware of cambelt, anti-Freeze, Brake Fluid etc. Also, insurance and £240 quid or more tax for something I might only use very few times a year and running another vehicle on a **** poor civil servants pay.

 

Maintenance not a problem if I put my mind to it, I used to do Concourse Events and shows with a 1983 Ford Escort RS1600!.

How much would you want for it?

Definitely looks worth saving rather than breaking!

Yes vrsTOM you are right. Thought I was in the right place for an enthusiast to take it on, but £500 ain't gonna buy it.

Unknown engine, unknown brakes. Would cost the best part of £1k to get it back on the road, so asking £2-£2.5k is dreaming. It's a totally stock car with no mods (that's where the money is in breaking), regardless of mileage as the engine requires going through, Market value is around £700-£1k and that's running and driving. £500 is realistic offer and probably better than scrap value. Breaking you'd be lucky to get more than £500 as all parts are stock!

When I break a stock vehicle (all working, some wear & tear etc) it's usually about £1,500 in the end. :)  Obviously this isn't taking in to account the time and effort to bare bones strip a whole car.

 

Fully working I think this car is worth up to £3k, but it would need to have good details of what was fixed, full MOT, etc etc.  That interior is lovely!

Thanks to this forum my VRS has now found a new enthusiast owner for what I thought car worth. New owner has plans already in hand to start the remedial work to get her up and running again.

 

Sorry to see her go but even if I had done work myself and kept, it would not have got the use deserves. 

 

Look forward to New Owner giving updates on progress from trailer back to roadworthyness.
