Exhaust makes gurgling sound

Featured Replies

Hi all. I have a new skoda octavia estare 2017. Recently i have noticed that there is a gurgling noise coming from my exhaust. Its sounds like a kettle  boiling or there is water being poured down a drain.

Does anyone else have this problem? Or is it just me lol.

Any feedback would be most apprieciated. Thanks

Mines does it too, right after starting up cold. Does not do it when the engine is warm.

Mind does it as well. Sounds quite sexy gurgling away on the drive. Then I move off and it’s still a 1.4 TSi...

I’ve not noticed it in mine. 2017 VRS

What engine Ines do you have

Not unusual as there is a lot of water resulting from the combustion process that condenses and collects in the exhaust system during the warm up phase.

Obviously it will be worse in cold weather and if the vehicle is subjected to a short trips that does not allow the exhaust to heat up and evaporate off the condensate.

I've been behind vehicles at traffic lights (in our Adelaide 'winter') where you can see steam coming out of the exhaust (indicating they have just started the engine) and when they pull away litres will pour out the exhaust onto the road.

Interesting I've noticed this just today, as the weather has turned cold, only 5 minutes after start and at idle (obviously). I have a 2L EA888 and it only seems to be obvious from the left exhaust. It hasn't bothered me or affected its performance but I did wonder this also.

I'm a bit late lol and I'm new 🤪 😅  but yea I've noticed this on my 2017 1.4 tsi octavia.. my question is does anyone notice intermittent vibration ... mostly noticeable from the seat?

there was an issue with fuel line vibration on some cars i think that caused an intermittent buzz/vibration from the drivers seat area

Probably just water condensation that builds up when you park and switch off. If you get someone to start your engine and watch the exhaust tail pipes you will be surprised how much water trickles out from a cold start.

Took you over 2 years to come up with that unoriginal comment?

Well water gurgles in my mouth so why shouldn't it sound the same in the exhaust.

Not disputing the sound noises, just the elapsed time from the original post.

Reminds me of a meeting we had at work on long outstanding software change requests.

We were able to knock two off the list because both requestors had died in the meantime.

That's wrong too, albeit a very common misunderstanding.  The condensation is from water vapour generated during combustion, when the engine is running, not after switch off.

Basic equation of internal combustion engine chemistry is dinosaur soup plus oxygen makes CO2 + H2O.  Very little else.  Most people don't know about the H20.
