Declaring mods.....

Featured Replies

Need a bit of advice from you. Probably wont get many replies but ill post anyway.

What mods do you declare to your insurance company?

If your mods were standard from an occy onto a fabia would you tell them?

I dont want to declare everything and end up paying more if you guys dont think its worth it.

Cheers

You need to declare everything on the car that causes it to be different from a factory-spec Fabia vRS. This will also include dealer-fit options :D

Chris

Factory-fit options are worth declaring if they increase (I should say, AS they increase) value of the vehicle. They aren't considered mods by insurance companies in the same sense though.

Mods could be cosmetic mods such as skirting etc, or engine mods etc.

If you have a serious accident and an investigator inspects the vehicle ANY undeclared mod will render your insurance invalid. You will not get paid out and may go to court for attempted fraud or driving without insurance.

Insurance companies are robbing *******s and will go to extreme lengths not to pay out, I've a mate who does it and they'll scrap your whole policy for a different set of mats if they think they can get away with it :thumbdwn:

Just as you don't want to pay more premium than necessary and look for ways of reducing it, the insurance company doesn't want to pay out either.

In the event of an accident they will look for ANY way to avoid paying you. To protect yourself you need to tell them of any change at all that might give them an excuse.

Cheers People :D

from that list in your signature i'd tell them about everything except the grille, light brows and stereo including everything in the "to come" section as missing out any is asking for troublr if you were ever to have an accident.

Ive had big trouble finding a comapany to insure the turbo.....not many companies are keen! :(

Also be warned that even asking them about mods could end up on your file - so if you ask and its gonna cost to much so you tell them you've not done it, they're likely to look for it in the event of a claim.

Hope that makes sense.

EDIT: Always a good idea to find out about insurance before paying for mods/cars with mods

It already came witht them :(

Managed to get insured with all mods but not without lots of research

But thanx for your help everyone :D

It took me a bit of doing as well, not getting a particularly cheap deal either. In my case the remap was the expensive bit, rest didn't add extra to the premium.

All is declared on mine as well, and I've always managed to get things approved etc pre-purchase even :)

Who did you get your insurance through then?

Ended up with Norwich Union (I use a broker though, my choices were therefore limited) - 3 points for SP50, 30k miles incl business & Euro cover per year, mods as per my sig (i.e. a fair amount).

Cosmetic mods like side skirts & tints would need to be declared too, it specifically mentioned on the application form and you tend to be required to supply photographs of the vehicle from several angles to show the cosmetic ones.

Insurance was about 1100 quid/year

Yeah I joined with Norwich Union as they were one of the few to insure me :(

You should declare all modifications, as said previously, insurance companies will go to any lenght not to pay out, I know a girl who wasn't paid out, because she had an aftermarket gear n*b fitted and a pair of 6x9's on the back shelf which she didn't declare!!
