Service indicator- HELP!!!

Featured Replies

My Fab Vrs has done 14000 miles and is 1 year old tomorrow (Happy Birthday Beast!). Driving home ttonight, the spanner sign popped up next to my mileometer, with "insp" flashing. Am I right in thinking that this is reminding me of its 1 year service?

I had it serviced in November (its 1st 10k service).

Is it anything to worry about :o ? Fluids seem fine to me (checked on Sunday).

Cheers

Sounds like someone forgot to reset the indicator properly. Contact your dealer and they'll clear it for you.

This is assuming they did the inspection and not just the oil change at 10k. Your service book should show what they did.

Mine went in for something similar recently and when they called me to tell me that it was a fault the had caused they also said the person who had done it would be up before the genreal manager on the following Monday - which may be an over-reaction but I guess they couldn't claim on the warranty for the time to fix it as it was their problem.

If they did the lube it is now due for the inspection service.

it tells you in the handbook how to reset the service indicator , what is this indicator for ? if buster had his car serviced in november how can it be due another inspection/service now , seems ridiculous , must be just to remind you that its due an annual service if you've not done 10k in 12 months.

There are two types of service, a "lube" service and an annual service (which must be carried out each year). The annual service is a lube service plus an inspection. If he only had the lube service done then the annual inspection is still required before the year is out. However, if he had the annual service in November, the service indicator was likely just not reset by the garage....

this indicator warning seems like a hangover from VW service schedules where they can go up to 20k between services or have too come in earlier because the car has been thrashed . chris i hope the mondeos a company car or it might start to cost you a lot of money when it breaks down (tdci's usually do)

I had exactly this problem on mine. Fabia vRSes are on fixed servicing every 10,000 miles, so the spanner should appear at around 9,500 miles. For continental cars, the service interval is 15,000 km, and the spanner appears at about the 14,000 mark.

For some reason, however, the service indicator thinks that the odometer is counting up in km, so it won't appear until 14,000 miles or so, which is obviously way too late. It can be changed using VAG-COM, although when I asked the dealer to do it, all they did was reset it to zero, not correct the miles/km problem as I found out after the next service.

Chances are, as happened after my car's 20k service, the mechanic hasn't reset the indicator as it wasn't showing on the screen in the first place. You can do this manually by turning on the ignition, and pressing AND HOLDING the trip rest button until the spanner goes away. It takes something like 15 seconds, and if you release it too soon, you reset all your trip meter data (as I found out from experience!) This doesn't cure the problem, of course, it only treats the symptoms. But then again, on a fixed service schedule car like the Fabia vRS, as long as you service it according to the schedule, and get the stamps to prove it's been done, the service indicator on the odometer screen is pretty redundant IMO...

[edit] As Neil said in the second post in this thread, if your November service was only an oil change, your car WILL be due an annual inspection regardless of how many miles you've done. Doesn't affect me too much, as I do about 20k a year, so the service schedule fits micely around my driving patterns. If you do 14k a year, though, it's not such a good system. You'd have to sit down and work out what's cheapest, but you could either get the oil changed at 7k, and do an inspection service at 14k / 1 year, or to do an inspection service every 10k, and don't worry about the 'annual' thing, as you'll be doing it every nine months or so. IIRC, the manual recommends the second approach, and so this may be best in terms of complying with the terms of your warranty. [/edit]

I've had it for 9 fault-free months :D I bought my Fabia at a similar age and mileage and during that time it ate 2 front tyres, the air con had packed up, one of the track rod ends was worn and the heated seat had packed up. That was before the clutch pedal snapped and left me stranded and then once that was fixed, the battery died (although I'm not sure Skoda are responsible for that ;)).

I've also subsequently found out that one of the seals on the brake caliper was also split....

I wish I'd known about Skoda reliability before I bought the car

Chris

As above:)

I had NO spanner @ 10K, but it came on with OIL despite having had the service done @ 10 K, I took the car back to the dealer who calculated the days & Miles, and hey presto @ 20 k, the spanner & OIL came on, car serviced. :)

Now here is the tricky bit, had the car serviced @ 30 K, but the spanner & OIL came on @ 34K  , reset as above, BUT at 38 K double spanner and INSP comes on. Checked service manual, & it states that the INSP is for MAJOR service inspections i.e 40K.

There is something VERY strange going on , as I am NOT the only person having this irritant.

Have the car booked in next week, to get it all reset properly and 40K inspection/service. ( also looking forward to having an Octy vRS as my loan car for the day :cool: )

Hi y'all!

Cheers for the advice! Spoke to the garage, and they it was 'cos they had forgotten to reset the indicator after its i10k inspection service in November. Taking it in on Monday to get it reset and my book stamped.

Got no legit excuse to go to JabbaSport now :-( Oh well I'm sure I can make one up, but must leave credit card at home!

chris , you must be one of the lucky few who haven't had problems with your tdci , we get at least 10 a week in at the dealership i work for that have fuel system faults of some description , engines break as well
