Form over function - Why?

Featured Replies

I was following a brand new Range Rover velar the other day and whilst it all looked nice and neat the driver decided to turn off; what a tiny pathetic attempt at an indicator!

It wasn't a particularly sunny day but the punny LED indicator was so difficult to see, I noticed as he went side on the LED wrapped around the side but the straight behind view was particularly poor.

Why has the world of design gone mad and been allowed to put form before function?

I have noticed in the dark, with cars that have thier indicators in the same cluster as the headlights/DRL's, it is or can be very difficult to make out if they are indicating.

I know some marques do switch off or dim the DRL's but with normal dipped headlights on, they can be very difficult to make out - or am I just getting old?

saw some of those scrolling Audi indicators as hazard lights yeserday. Looked crap and not so effective, I would have thought as a safety feature, they should flash like regular hazard lights.

Them audi scroll lights are just distracting. It doesnt even look good imo.

But, compared to their circa 2010 teeny tiny indicators.. at least you can see the scrollers in more than 0lux ambient light..

I reckon: The more vehicles crashed, the more vehicles and parts needing replacing, the more sales.

Thats quite a cynical view..

I just reckoned it was coz audi are aware their typical owners don't use them anyway, so making them invisible doesn't matter anyway ;) :D

I agree,as well as the indicators being hard to see when the headlights are on ive noticed on some cars when they are indicating & have their foot on the brake its hard to see the indicators.

On a snow day like today i like Range Rover spotting. & Discovery Sport spotting.

Black ones, White, Grey with the cloak of invisibility.

The indicators if used are just sh!te.

Lots of very new ones now seem to be running with no DRL's on or DRL's and Headlights but once they barrel past you secure in the knowledge that they are king of the road there are no rear lights on, or if they are they are snow caked as is the  whole rear of the vehicle.

So often i see them blasting up the road in the outside lane or overtaking and then when next you come up behind them they are near invisible stopped in the traffic.

Well apart from those brake lights that you may or may not see. If they brake pedal is being held, or is it Auto Hold?  Not all have them on.

(The Police Range Rovers seem to though, they just must sit Foot on brake.)

They test these things around the world, so JLR know how bad the back of them are in Snowy driving.

It checks out though, dunnit?

Kinda like planned obsolescence through the use of cheap capacitiors and other components (and not just in cars)...

Can't say I've had much of a problem with Audi indicators, especially the scanning LED ones - You tend to notice those, either yourself or through another driver pointing and shouting "Gaaaaaaaaaaaaay" at them!! :D

Where I do find it an issue is on smaller curvy hatchbacky type city cars with circular light clusters that have tail, brake, reverse and indicator all incorporated into the one disc assembly and the indicator is just one small LED in the middle or a narrow ring around the outside.

If you see one of these in front of you check out how the rear indicators are,

daylight or night time.

There really are not fit for purpose, but get an EU Type Approval.

EU Type approval & Construction & Use is what is allowing manufacturers to turn out these lights that might be at the heights they have to be and supposedly seen from the correct angles, but in the real world are dangerous, or just not fit for purpose of see and be seen and give warnings to other road users of your intention.
