New Brake Pads/Disks

Featured Replies

Are Mintex any good? I have founds some going for

I got the cheapest discs I could from the local motor factor (around £70) and got some lucas pads to go with them. They're fine for my day to day driving although they did suffer a little "fretting" after several consetutive 130-0mph heavy stops (on an airfield).

Not sure if "fretting" is the correct term but you could feel a little vibration when braking normally, a bit like a warped disc would feel. Caused by the surface of the pad going beyond its normal operating temperature - 250 miles later it was gone.

Does your car had a pad wear indicator? If so you need to get a pad set that has a wire in one ad to connect to the car - if you dont do this you'll have a brake warning light on all the time (unless you disable it through VAG-COM or joint the 2 wires together at the hub mounted connector).

If you're not a complete petrol head (judging by the car, you're not) you cant really go wrong with the discs you've chosen and some pads from Halfords (or a motor factor)

Thanks for the information. i think I will get these disks and some pads just need to find out the codes required for my car and I'll get them as the stock brakes (non-vrs) are just not good enough.

Thanks

By "not good enough" do you mean you're unhappy with the way they wear or the stopping power (lack of)?

I find the 288mm brakes perfectly adequate for stopping my Elegance estate so perhaps you should consider a brake fluid change (standard grade fluid) at the same time as the disc/pad change.

On both counts really. Last time a got them changed I got new disks all round and new pads (Skoda replacements). They got grooved pretty quickly and the stopping power has never been great considering the power the car has.

I think I just want to replace the fronts as these are the main ones and get new pads also. The fluid was also changed last time but was never overly happy with them.

I am happy to replace these just really want a set of fronts that brake well and don't fade and groove easily. I do sometimes get a bit of vibration on gentle braking and moderate breaking and I think this is just build up on the brakes as a sharp brake usually sorts it out.

my octy 110 tdi front discs £24 pads 19.50 rear discs 12.50 pads £15 local motor factors sheffield

That is cheap. Still thinking about Mintex disks for the fron and just need to get some better pads tham OEM. Then get someone to fit them!! (Not a mechanic!!)

Dont pay too much to have them fited - I'd do them for a few quid if you lived a little closer ;)

Takes me 20mins per side to do front discs and pads.
