NSF Coil Spring / Driveshaft Gaitor

Featured Replies

Car needs new coil spring replacing as failed on MOT. Garage quoted £150 with possible £30 extra if they struggle or have issues with the mount bolts on top.

This sound reasonable???

Also, if they find a split in the driveshaft gaitor, will that also fail the mot? (it is probably difficult for them to see without taking the wheel off).

Any ideas on cost if this needs replacing please?

Cheers.

I could be wrong but as it has passed except for the spring it cant be failed for something else. Makes it look like the tester isn't up to it.

The driveshaft gaiter can be seen easily with or without the wheel in place. A sign of a failed gaiter are oil/grease thrown around the inner face of the wheel and easily seen, it would have been noticed at the initial test.

Don't know about costs as I usually do my own.

A genuine front VAG spring for me costs £101 each unfitted.

However your spring type may not be as expensive.

£50 for labour sounds about right.

The top 3 bolts could be problematic as the captive nuts on the bearing mount are set in rubber so if the bolts are excessively rusted or not cleaned before removal the bolt can bind and twist the nut free leaving you to cut the bolt head off, fit a new bolt, washer and nut or fit a new top bearing mount.

Any damage to CV joint boot should be immediately obvious regardless of whether wheel is fitted or not.

if it's spotted on retest, then yes it can be failed again; if this happens then another "full" mot is required at full cost (what ever the test centre charges upto £54.80).

Cheers bud, but to add.....................technically, it hasn't passed on anything else yet, it just hasn't failed on anything else yet either.

But also..............on speaking to the garage, they are aware of the split and they explained to me that although it used to be an immediate fail they now have options as to if it is keeping crud out (something like that) it can be classed as ok.

It will cost circa £100 fitted (30 kit +70 labour)

Although I do think the garage are not particularly cheap (putting it politely - but then what is cheap nowadays) I do trust them not to do unnecessary work and to do a proper job. As a tradesman myself i realise the value of this.

I am letting them do the spring as i do not have the tools, and as they, and mac state about the poss problematic bolts, it makes sense.

Not going to do the boot as the car is old and i'm hoping to swap soon as anyway.

Cheers.
