Changing just one spring?

Featured Replies

Front offside spring went bang over a speed hump.

F1 autocentres says its taken out the top cup too. They said springs should be replaced in pairs. Is that true?

In a word YES, coil springs should always be replaced as a pair, as one new spring and one old spring could give un even braking braking and can give the vehicle weird and unstable/uneven handling; also if one spring has broke the other one may not be far behind it.

Same thing with shock absorbers.

Anything on your suspension or brakes should ideally be done in pairs as both sides will have had similar wear.

I had one front spring and top bearing replaced 4 years ago. The other was completely fine. Nothing untoward happened. Saying that it might go bang tomorrow. Or next year. YMMV

logically it makes sense................but I'm only doing one side on mine though as my nsf has failed mot as noted as fractured.

It is an old car though so not worth both sides IMO, unless you can do them yourself maybe.

For the same reason............speed humps...............and i drive over them in 2nd gear probably less than 10mph.

I would, so I give it a yes.

Going in tomorrow to have both front springs and shocks changed at an independent specialist. £358 vs £536 at F1 vs ~£780 at dealer.

Weeping shock on other side for last 2 years so decided to go for the full monty. They say replacement shocks will probably be Sachs.
