I've got a 2013 Skoda Octavia 2 FL which is factory fitted with low beam xenon projectors that came with halogen bulbs.

 

Here's the question..is it efficient/possible/easy to fit Leds/HIDS without any tricks?

I read here that it's recommended to install a no-canbus kit and code the vcds instead, but Im not 100% sure if it's the same for the 2013 vehicle.

 

As far as that goes, I'd be incredibly thankful if someone who has successfully fitted Leds/HIDS on their 2013 mk2 would share their experience.

If they have halogen bulbs, they are halogen projectors not xenon projectors. There are differences as a D1S and H7 bulb have very different light output patterns.

 

I would skip LEDs, all the images I've seen of H7 LED bulbs haven't been good. You end up with lots of foreground and no distance lighting, this is the opposite of what you want.

 

Some members have fitted H7 HID kits and plenty have needed replacement BCM's after they've fried them - even with VCDS coding. More cautious members have used relay wiring looms, I don't recall seeing any problems when fitted in this fashion.

 

Ideally, you would fit OEM xenon headlights and also add the level levelling system/headlight washers. It's not particularly hard but can be pricey depending where you find the headlights.

 

You've not added where you're from, if you're in the UK or EU then only the final option is road legal.

Thank you for the input.. I was indeed a little confused and didn't know halogen and xenon projectors were any different.

 

I'm in EU

I've found OEM xenon headlights for no less than 500€

If you were in the UK you may need to factor in auto leveling and lens wash into to keep it legal - not sure if same applies to rest of EU.

 

And then you'd pay for it every year on your insurance as a modification.

 

I'd be inclined to live with halogens and add it to the wish list for your next car.

We havent got these types of requirements here. 

 

I guess I won't risk putting on HIDs in fear of causing electrical damage. 

 

As I understand installing LEDs in a halogen projector housing is worthless as compared to a good halogen bulb in terms of distance vision

 

What about Osram Nightbreakers?

 

Still halogen, so no legal or insurance issues, no Bcm issues, but throw a bit more light.

Yeah I was thinking about them as well. Have you got any insight concerning their longevity? I heard they get dimmer relatively quick for some

It would be illegal to fit LED's to any car which was not fitted from the factory and would result in a fine from the Police and M.O.T. failure when tested, so my advice don't do it not worth all the grief.

Finally should be aware LED's operating temperature is the same as the SUN i.e. very hot.

Some leds may have a similar colour temperature to the sun, but the effective temperatures are quite different.

I must get some led lighting in my house then....................Save me a fortune on heating, Lol.

Already have them in my kitchen, the spots cost £8 each but come with 25 year guarantee and yes they are very bright and draw less electricity just like car LED's use less battery energy therefore you get better mpg than Xenons.

They're underwhelming. Only very slightly brighter than standard halogen (I ran one side by side with a standard bulb for a while) and have a very short lifespan. Mine lasted about 8 months.....from March to December, so mostly summer! I wouldn't buy them again for low beam, but might try them in the high beam....as they are on less lifespan might be more acceptable and the slightly extra light might make a bigger difference in the high beam.
