Octavia will turn over but not start, electrical issues..

Featured Replies

Hi Briskoda!

A challenge ... maybe..

I have a bit of a problem with my Octavia Mk1 2000 mdl, 1.6L gas (AKL engine).

Problem started a few months ago, car would idle roughly, sometimes the engine would stop, but a little light step on the gas pedal would even the idle out and it was okay to drive.. This happened just sometimes.. other times the car ran fine..
After ingoring this problem for some time I gave up and I replaced the fuel filter, all seemed to be working fine after that... I drove the car approx 5-10km, parked it and all was okay. No rough idle, no start issues .. nothing.

Then the car was started again that evening (3-4 hours later), It idled fine. Just with the car idling in the parking lot, the light switch (to turn on internal dashboard ligths - it was night) was turned on,  the moment when the switch was turned, the car stalled and has not started since...!!

After quite some investigation that started out with all fuses tested, switching out the fuel pump, testing fuelpump fuse and relay I found that the Relay for the FuelPump did not actuate - testing the relays themselves showed that they are working properly. Even tried switching out the fuelPump Relay just in case.. no avail.

I tested the Relay plugs with a mulitmeter (according to the workshop manual procedure), all connections fine except when going from both 16 and 19 (permanent power on and power via the starter) to ground would show 8-9volts indicating a voltage drop via ground wire ( I would think).. all other connections directly to ground showed approx car battery voltage, 12.3V. So I jumped the relay connections and got the fuel pump to start, but the car would not start even with the pump going.. It turnes over but acts like "it needs gas" and nothing happens..

That turned me to the Cranskhaft/Camshaft position sensor .. Testing the sensor itself showed it should be working.

So even further analysis showed that there is NO POWER to either Crankshaft position sensor nor the Knock sensor - I measured it with the multimeter, ignition on, 0V on both signal and power wire, for both sensor plugs.

Even further details - I cannot get any connection to the ECU via ELM327 blutetooth OBD2 reader (tested two different OBD2 readers). So no fault codes (no "check engine" light either indicating stored faults).

So I am at a loss here ..  I have read about a "terminal 30" relay that should feed power to the ECU and from there, to these relays and the Camshaft sensor - but I cannot for the life of me find that relay .. (If it is even in this car ..)

I did a basic check of the wires running from the camshaft position- and knocks sensors leading to the ECU, nothing looks tarnished or disconnected on a brief check atleast..

Also did a basic check of wires running from the Relay connection besides the driver seat and to the back (stopped at the backseat) and no visible disconnection, oxidation nor any tarnished wires..

Checked the ECU cables under the windshield wipers and all connections look okay.. Alot of dirt, but nothing indicating that any wires are damaged.

So has anyone had this problem before .. or have any suggestions ?
