Has anyone been brave enough to try Gas bonnet struts on their Karoq yet? Just interested to know if it's a viable option.

Don't tell me that like the Yeti they have stuck with not having gas bonnet struts!

 

The Karoq isn't that cheap and that is a poor show. Apart from the Yeti I can't remember the last car I had with a "line prop".

its just simple cost cutting! i have electric boot but bonnet is manual up and manual assisted down, clunk! 

 

my bmw is gas assisted and its so, well... easy and modern

I suppose the simply smart advertising hype could go along the lines that the bonnet does need to come up in between services as its so reliable, unlike bmw et al.

My wife's dacia sandero has a gas strut on a car the third of the price. 

That's for when you connect the lawnmower option!

Is the bonnet that heavy? I shall explore my new toy tomorrow, maybe I need a can of spinach like Popeye before I try and lift the bonnet.

the release is on passanger side under glove box area, almost gave up finding it, my fault was looking in the most logical/common place, underneath driver side 

Had a test drive in a Volvo XC40, value £41k, that doesn’t have gas strut either. List price is no indicator it seems.

very nice car by the way, a good few cuts above the Karoq but I refuse to pay the extra road tax on a 40k+ car...

 

Has anyone tried these yet? At £35.47 delivered, albeit with maybe a 4 week lead time from China, I'm tempted to treat my Karoc for when it arrives.

Had our Karoq since 11th Jan and haven't needed to lift the bonnet yet, but I can't see it being a problem.

My previous Fiat Multipla had gas struts and they weakened over time and the bonnet fell on my head a few times. In the end I used a stick to prop the bonnet up.

Not on the Karoq, but members have been retrofitting gas struts to Skoda's for years, the forum is full of threads on how to do it, but it's pretty simple...

I fitted these to mine, after ordering them while I was waiting for my Karoq to me delivered.

They do not lift quite as high as the standard prop but work well.

I did put a small piece of rubber under the front of the brackets that rest on the bonnet strengthening metalwork.

They make filling the washer tank and checking levels very easy as the bonnet is quite heavy.

Guess I was lucky nothing paid but I have paid on odd items in the past.

I forgot to mention on my last post that the brackets had slightly sharp edges so I filed them off and gave them a bit of paint.

I briefly considered the “Strut Mod” when our Octavia arrived minus bonnet struts, but decided that butchering the OEM bonnet and wing area to take the shoddy mounting brackets would lead to long term rust problems.

 

And I can still lift and prop a bonnet in my old age so I’m glad I spent the cash elsewhere.

 

And as stated above, unlike many years ago I don’t have to open the bonnet every week just to keep the car running.

 

ps - I still love throwing the Kodiaq bonnet open with 1 hand 😀

No butchering involved when I fitted them to my karoq.

It only involves undoing one nut and fitting the bracket which admittedly I had smoothed the edges of and touched up with paint and then slipped a small piece of rubber under so end of bracket is not resting directly on the bonnet.

The bottom gas strut mounting hole is already there so wonder if gas struts are standard fit in some countries ? or if skoda just put them there in case they change  the spec at a future date and don't have to re tool..

Not a must have feature butI thought not a lot of money to spend on a simple mod and only takes 5 minutes  each side to fit.
