Tyre Valve Failure Beware

Recommended Posts

A tyre valve, only 5 years old, perished on a family car, and deflated the tyre. Luckily when parked up in the cold weather. Deep cracks in the rubber where it meets the rim. Never seen that before. Im wondering if another tyre failure last year, on the same axle of the car, had a similar cause, there was not enough of that tyre left to see if it was a normal puncture.

Comments please!

Tyres and valves deteriorate with time and cold weather hardens rubber making it less flexible.  Check your tyres and valves for cracks more often and change if found.

The wheel trim, held in place with wheel nuts, makes it difficult to flex the valve sideways to check for cracks.

So not a routine check like tyre pressures. Easier with alloys and no wheel trims.

Never had such a failure  in 50 years of motoring.  Aren't I lucky.

?

On what make of car?

Many vehicle do not have the issue because tyres might get replaced before 5 years so there are now valves fitted with now tyres.

But then there are plenty vehicles with tyres much older than 5 years old and the valves perfectly OK.

Not the original valves or tyres and fitted by a national tyre specialist around 5 years ago.

Getz with steel wheels. Never had such problems before. Maybe partly due to low annual mileage stretching out the change intervals.

More likely how they were pulled through by the tyre fitter when the new valves were put in, if new valves were put in, which they might not have been.

& the bending on the valve to check tyre pressures if that has been getting done every month for lots of years....

I have 14" rims / tyres sitting stored since taken off a 2006 Kia Picanto 12 years ago  and the tyres which never did more than 100 miles and the valves are as new.

Tyre fitters and garages that I use replace valves as a matter of course.

@gregoir - Depending on the design of the trims, they can strain the valve stem if not fitted "just so" so check the other trims aren't against the valves too!

^^^ They have too, for the Corporate Responsibility and Road User / Customer safety, more than their jobs worth..

They always do, apart from the odd one that might not, be it once in a thousand new tyres fitted it happens,

like places that fit part worn tyres, places that a Wash & Wax centres that Mail Order Tyres can be collected at or fitted free.  I know one like that.  (then there might be the odd, Free Puncture repair on a Wednesday for Senior Citizen type employees, but they do not last long as tyre fitters do they?  or ones that wipe clean Oil filters and then put some oily marks on them!.)
