A few days ago I spotted a car outside a public building with 12 02 on its tax disc. Is this a record for expired VED?

Nope - but then it may have been declared offroad. Regularly spot cars like that which are still being left on public roads, just not driven. Report it IMHO, if it's not declared offroad it's gonna cost the owner, if it is declared offroad it may still trigger a fine as it's on the road.

Ooooh, thanks for reminding me. Been showing the old one for the last 3 days - that'll teach me for renewing so early I forget to actually put the new one in the window at the end of the month

If you're showing the old one but have the new one on you you'd probably get away with it - that said I try to put the new one one straight away and keep the old one in the glove box until it expires, as I'm kinda like you in that otherwise I'd probably forget :P

The W reg car was spotted outside the local council chambers about a week after expired VED had been discussed at the local community council meeting! Yes, I did report it so I'm interested to hear what action the police took. The value shown is £160 so it could be no insurance or MOT as well as no valid VED. Not an old banger but a German luxury brand!
