Whine from new engine on cold start

Featured Replies

Just taken delivery of my new 245 DSG. Really pleased with the car. After a few days with the car I noticed that when it's started from stone cold, there is a little whine for about 1/2 a second when you start it. It's like a mechanical belt whine.

This only happens from stone cold and doesn't do it again if you turned it off and restarted straight away.

Has anyone else had this? Obviously I don't want to go taking it in for them to investigate and find there's nowt wrong!

Yep. My pre facelift did it and my facelift does it as well. It’s normal, as far as I can tell.

+1 - mine does this every time; seems normal and have heard it with another VRS ('14 plate) starting up next to me a few months back which set my mind more at ease. Can't give you a description of what it is though, as I don't know.

I've always accepted it as normal also, and after it's gone the engine runs at about 1,100rpm for about 30-40 seconds with another thick airy sound from the engine until it's (I think) warmed up enough to drive and drops to 850-900rpm. Again, I've thought this to be normal.
