Odd behaviour temperature gauge

Featured Replies

Hello everyone!

Just got my first Skoda, a 2001 Octavia 1.4, a couple of weeks ago and I am very happy with it this far! I have been doing some work on it, timing belt change, filters etc, to try and keep it good and reliable for years to come.

Now to my question. I've noticed that the temperature gauge acts funny and been wondering about the cause. Specifically it climbs normally from a cold start till it reaches normal working temperature and then the gauge stops registering (drops down to 0 again) and then it stays there until the car has stood for a while and cooled of. Then the sequence repeats itself.

Is the problem more likely with the gauge itself, the sensor or could it be some thermostat related issue?

There is no indication of over-heating, the engine gets warm reasonably quick and runs well.

Thanks for any input!

Could be a faulty coolant temperature sensor. They are quite common for failing. Only fit a genuine part from either TPS or Skoda dealer. As non genuine are prone to causing issues like your experiencing. When the car is at normal working temperature you can hold the top and bottom rad hoses and if they are the same temperature ie hot then I doubt it’s a thermostat issue if one is a lot cooler than the other it could be thermostat too.

Temp sensor and as above, buy genuine or buy a dozen cheap ones, as youll replace them fortnightly..

@S_Belmont - As above, probably the CTS, and buy a genuine one.

Thank you for all the quick replys!

I will check the radiator hoses and probably order a new temp sensor. Noob question: where is it located on the block?
