'Molyslip-G' to improve gear-change ?

Featured Replies

I bought an '09' Skoda Octavia 1.9TDI PD last week which has covered 124,000 miles.

Before doing so I sought the advice of a local specialist garage.

They told me providing it has a full dealer service history (which it has), the correct oil will have been used so within reason it should still be good for a considerable number of more miles yet. I sincerely hope so.

Overall, I am very pleased with the car. Up till two years ago my wife owned a Felicia, from new, for eighteen years (largely problem free, apart from 'eating' alternators).

My only surprise with the Octavia is how relatively heavy the gear-change is, especially finding first gear. I am basing my comparison on a family owned Mazda.

Question:- Has anyone got experience, or, can tell me either way - if something like Molyslip-G is advisable to inject into the gearbox and differential.

I am not foolhardy enough to do this without seeking 'sound'advice first.

@ADOKS13 - I'd suggest asking that garage to quote for changing the gearbox oil using VAG gear oil. Molyslip strikes me as a very bad idea, because it works by making things more slippery, and friction is what makes the balk ring synchromesh on the forward gears work.

+1    also it may NEVER have been changed only topped up (if you're lucky)   not quite "sealed for life-Sir"   ie:  =  short life:sadsmile:

Thanks "Ken" and "Cheshire Cat" for your quick responses to my query.

I will heed your advice and not use an additive such as Molyslip-G in the gearbox.

I have ordered some VAG spec gear oil and when it arrives will try topping up the box.

If, after a reasonable mileage, I feel the 'change' has not got better - I will resort to a full gearbox oil change.

Out of interest, I am obtaining parts from:- Onlinecarparts.co.uk   (I have no ties to the company).

I have bought:- a cambelt kit (including a water pump); alternator belt; gearbox oil; brake fluid; oil; filter; and, a sump plug.

I chose them because they were offering a 19% discount on OEM quality parts and free delivery, if you spend £140.

I believe the head office is in Berlin, but, I am curious where the order will be fulfilled from.

So far someone phoned me and went through a rigorous security check to prevent fraud (quite impressed).

If anyone will find it useful, I can place a later post to tell you if the shopping experience lives up to my expectations.

Hi, my Octavia has just covered 209,000miles and drives well - enjoy your new car!
