Installing AUX USB in armrest - help needed

Featured Replies

Hi Briskodians,

I need some help with finding a guide to install an AUX USB socket in my armrest and wire it into my aftermarket headunit.

My searches so far came up unsatisfactory.

I've installed an aftermarket headunit on my Skoda Octavia Mk2 1Z3 2008, and now I want to try running Google Auto on it.

The unit has two USB ports at the back, so I need to route the cable somewhere.

I found a relatively easy instruction on how to route it into a storage compartment above (the glasses holder), but I don't like it and I'd like to avoid drilling if possible.

What I want to do is route the cable into an armrest and replace an existing 3.5mm AUX jack with a combined 3.5mm + USB socket.

Something like this (link):

I've got little to no experience with car interior, so I could really use a photo-guide, or even better a video on how to actually do it and not wreck my car interior in the process.

Thanks for any help!

Think you may well be doing this from scratch fella, probably by cutting out whatever the hole required is and just slotting it in. I'd be amazed if someone has done exactly what you want given the exact requirement you have, but you never know.

I presume you don't have a jumbo box in the centre as this already has a factory fit 3.5mm socket in it so you'd just need a usb. I fitted my usb socket into a blank next to the airbag off light but it's just for charging.  Easy to do though, have a search for usb fitting and you might get something you need.

Thanks, @blackspaven!

Sorry I didn't make myself clear enough. I do have a jumbo box, and it does have a factory fit 3.5mm socket in it (probably will edit the post to reflect this)

This is why routing USB there seems an obvious choice to me - there's a socket there allready!

What stumps me is how to route the cable all the way from a headunit to the jumbo box (armrest).

Take a look at the pinned thread above, it gives comprehensive instructions to remove center console so you can route the usb cable,

Ah, in that case it's an absolute piece of p1ss to get a cable from the stereo to the jumbo: just take the side panels by the feet off and feed it through. The back vents of the jumbo comes off to see where you're feeding it through. Easy.

Thanks Cryonut and blackspaven!

This post is useful in particular, I think I have enough to muster up my courage and get in :)

I'll do my best to take many pictures in the process :)
