Window scratches

Featured Replies

Morning all, just had my car over two weeks now, and driving in low sun this morning I noticed light scratches on my windscreen and side windows, presume these are from scraping frost off, any ideas on how to remove? TIA

Well buffing the glass with glass polish should reduce the raised sides of these scratches, but that would be as good as it gets, remember a scratch is a cut inside the surface, you will never remove that unless you ground the surrounding surface down by the depth of these scratches.

I've never tried to reduce the appearance of scratches in glass by the way, just a suggestion, that was all.

Thanks very much, going to take it to a workshop I’ve heard of locally, if possible I guess it won’t be cheap

Glass is incredibly hard to polish.

It's the hardest thing by far.

It is also very very messy. Horribly messy.

You need cerium oxide based polish (carpro ceriglass) and rayon glass polishing pads and some water.

Apply plenty of polish to a lightly spritzed pad. Polish with hard pressure at max speed on rotary.
When the polish starts to dry, spritz some water on the screen. repeat. polish for about 2 or 3 minutes.
Work in small sections about 20x20"/

Just be aware a lot of these so called kits on eBay are just snake oil

Plastic scraper cannot scratch the glass what usually happens it's grit and grime on the glass from the previous day's drive  prior to scraping

youthen come along with the scraper and pretty much like rubbing sandpaper over the screen

Frost on glass corresponds usually with wet grimey roads

As a rule I don't usually scrape the sidewindows as I live in the middle of nowhere and nearest junction is 5 miles away so.no issues there  and have aquapel on the front screen son unless it's really really cold it very rarely freezes

If you are a keen scraper make a point of squirting screen wash and a wipe prior to parking up and only scrape where the wipers have been

If the scratches are similar to swirl marks, even a bit deeper than swirls, you can get rid of them with 'T' cut. Just take your time and rub all the same way across the scratch concentrating your efforts in the worst places. You may have to do the whole window if the scratches are bad to get the same clean scratch free finish. But it does work for light scratching if you are prepared to do them over two or three times. Even windscreens will respond if you are careful and put the effort in. Try a test piece first before you go over the whole car so you are satified it works (it does if you do it right).
