Hi everyone, I'm sure it's on here somewhere, but I can't seem to find the setting needed to torque up the front brake carrier bolt on my 2006 vrs. Whilst renewing my discs and pads at the weekend, I discovered this bolt (M12 I think) was not very tight at all and when refitting it, its just spinning and not nipping up at all. I've managed to reserve a couple of bolts from TPS and am hoping (fingers crossed) that its the bolt at fault and not what it screws into. Any info on the toque setting of this bolt will be most appreciated.

That's the one Wino. Thanks mate. If its still no good with the new bolt, any ideas ? Would it just be a case of drilling and tapping to the next suitable size ?

Could maybe put a helicoil in the carrier, or replace it. Depends how much meat there is around the existing tapped hole.

Looks like the tapped hole (2 off) is in the wheel bearing housing. I'll have to investigate, if the new bolt doesn't do the trick.

Sorry, yeah, I was looking at it wrong. Should mean there's more meat there for helicoiling etc.

Update. The new M12x1.5 bolt was no better than the old one, so I'm going down the route of drilling and tapping the wheel bearing housing. I'm thinking M14x2 but I'm going to have a chat first with one of the machinists on the shopfloor. Also, I'm going to have to open out the carrier hole to allow the new bolt to pass through. I should imagine it will have to be a snuggish fit but obviously have some clearance.  I'll be best off drilling the carrier on the pillar drill to make sure the drill doesn't wander off.

Chat about helicoils too, it's  probably a better approach.

All sorted Wino. I drilled and tapped the hub to M14x1.5. I used a 31/64" drill by the way. Then opened out the carrier hole on the pedestal drill , making sure the job was level. Then fit a brand new M14x1.5x50 bolt ( which I had to cut to length) I couldn't get a serrated flange had bolt, so opted for a flat washer and serrated washer courtesy of Hawkes fasteners Middlesbrough. I gave the carrier a quick sandblast and paint whilst it was off to freshen things up. Then boxed back up. All is well. just a case of bedding the brakes in now. I haven't got a photo of the finished job as I was trying to beat the rain and forgot to take one.

Glad to see you got it sorted mate.

sadly the size of the bolt and pitch of thread, the torque figures don’t add up so they always strip. - as well as when you remove the bolt all the excess dirt and brake dust damage the threads in the first place.

 

when I do mine I just tighten them with a normal half inch ratchet and then an extra nip with the power bar then check again after a few miles and heat cycles

did mine to 90 ft/lbs which felt tight enough , will check them in a few weeks but should be fine for my weekly trip to the supermarket.....
