Mk1 Octy Speaker upgrade

Featured Replies

Hi All

I know absolutely nothing about ice so you'll have to bear with me, I have a mk1 2002 octavia with an MFD1 Radio I have an aux lead plugged into it and i plug my iPod into it but if im listening to quiet songs the volume won't really go loud enough its like the mfd has a volume limit ?? Would upgrading the speakers help ? If so I want some that will fit into the door without any modification and so the oem plastic mesh will fit over it like the original. price doesnt really bother me just as long as its right

cheers

James

I doubt new speakers would help, but a new headunit would (aftermarket).  The bass is also rubbish on the stock speakers - years ago I fitted a flat 8" active subwoofer into the rear boot door pocket, thats well worth doing.  You do have to run a cable from the battery to the boot however!  Worth the effort though.

Hi Thanks for your reply

So what is wrong with the mfd unit is it a fault with it or a limit or is it just badly designed??

Cheers

Im not sure - my standard head unit was the tape/radio with the 6 CD changer

To say that something is "wrong" may not be the correct way to describe the older head units.

It is just that more modern head units have come on leaps and bounds over the last few years due to better choice of electronics, and more thoughtful use of their footprint to fit in older vehicles.

The nearest analogy I can think of is comparing an old pentium 2 computer to a current i5, they both will do a spreadsheet and surf the net, but the later epuipment will take advantage of so much extra processing ability, that the old machine just becomes plain old fashioned hard work.

Back in the day when the MFD1 was designed, people viewed in car entertainment more as a way to drown out the engine noise, than today's units that can play many file types including FLAC, which is about as close as you will come in a car to the original studio recording.

To answer your initial question, would speakers make a difference - yes, ................... but would it be very noticeable over standard?, - probably not what you might be expecting.

Some of the best sound systems I have heard in a road car have come from a reasonable brand head unit, with the front speakers changed to components and then amplified on the fronts. When a choice of a good music medium is then chosen, the end result is very hard to criticise.

It all comes down to budget really at the end of the day, if you just want a slight change to your music, speakers may do it and quite cheaply, but if you are looking for the usual more base, crisper treble, and generally louder, then a hardware change will probably be needed as well.

The MFD1 from memory has a couple of settings menus that can alter base, treble etc, have you checked these are set correctly and that any media volume is set correctly rather than the overall volume?.

Just a few thoughts, hope it helps.

Cheers all for your replys i will have a look on the volume menu and have a play around Many Thanks all !!

Id still recommend the active subwoofer!  Its about the size of a yellow pages and with some work improves the overall sound no end!

That was the bit I meant to put in my previous post but forgot, as Liverpool-Lad has said, the only real way to a proper bass response is some form of sub, anything else is playing on the outskirts really.

If you check in the guides section, Bowders1 gives a how to for adding a subwoofer to an MFD1.

To be honest though, I would eventually budget for a more modern head unit - summer sales should be coming soon. :)

Cheers I might have a look at that im not that bothered about changing the MFD Head unit as i'm actually quite fond of it and the navigation does come in useful sometimes also i am quite fond of the OEM look

Cheers

The subwoofer I bought has s high level input, so simply wire it to the rear speakers!
