Engine trouble

Featured Replies

Hi all,

New here. Dropped in for some good sound info.

I was driving the other day and my oil warning light came on as i stopped at a set of traffic lights. As i set of the car juddered a bit and lost most of it's power. I pulled up checked the oil it looked a lilttle dry on top end so i topped up with about a regular sized cup full of oil. All seemed ok till a few mins later and same again this time my engine was squeeling and sounded like a bag of spanners been shook around:dry:. I then left the car for around 5hrs or so started her up all seemed fine. I drove around 6miles and the engine again was making all the same noises but with NO oil warning light on?!?!

I pulled up at the nearest safest piont and then got a tow to my destination.

Today easter sunday i decided to empty oil and take the sump off. To my dismay the bottom of the sump has sludge in it with alot of metal flakes also with some copper looking flakes in there too. Anyone any ideas what's happened.. could it be conrods or pistons?

I've not long ago spent a fortune on this car incl a vitually new turbo and seals and silicone pipework etc. Please help :crying:

Sounds like you've experienced the classic blocked pick up pipe. When the gauze in the pick up pipe gets blocked it can't suck the oil through from the sump and so the engine is starved of oil. The top end gets noisy quickly due to the hydraulic tappets not getting the oil they need. If you're lucky, a good clear out of the sump and a new pick up pipe and you might be ok. The presence of metal in the sump is concerning though, but as you've already got the sump off, you may aswel stick a new pick up on and see if you've got away with it.

It's got copper and metal type shavings in the sump. Been to 2 garages n both pretty much saying it's bearings. 1 saying big end bearing other saying bottom either way they both saying it's a big job and engine needs to come apart so costing a few quid. I don't wana risk doing the pump n pick up pipe for it all to be in vain. I've spent arond a grand on engine since November so am sceptical about this to be honest. Am seriously thinking of selling as is. Here's a pic of the sump n what's in it :crying:

For the cost of a new pickup pipe, which is about £20, I'd be replacing it before I wrote the engine off. Part numbers for the pickup and rubber o ring are 06A115251 and N0282222.

While the sump is off, it's a 2 minute job as it's only held on by 2 small bolts. No need to be thinking about changing the pump aswel, I've not known one to fail on these engines, it's always the pickup.

Thanks mate. Just pondering weather to sell it as been told coza the metal filings in sump it's bearings that have gone so guna need new 1s. Really don't fancy spending anymore £££ on it to be fair but i'm in limbo as to keep it :sadsmile:

That does indeed look like metal from bearing shells I'm afraid.
