What to do about faulty ignition lock barrel ?

Featured Replies

Key wouldnt turn to start car ( 2002 ASV elegance combi ) yesterday evening.

After a ( very great )  lot of fiddling I managed to get it to turn  ( & start, & drive home )

Today, took the covers off the steering column and ( after even more fiddling around with the lock )  took out the barrel.

Its  clear that the lock barrel has problems

What are the options ?

Can it be refurbished ?

or does it have to be replaced ?

If it has to be replaced how can I get one that will match the present key ( that does all the door locks ) ?

what exactly is the problem with the barrel---do you have a relativlly  unworn key  or is it not key related

Happens with both keys ( they are the originals so are a little worn ). Dont feel its key related.

Since original post I have flushed the barrel out with petrol. This has improved things considerably. Its reassembled and ( at least for the time being ) working.

Still would like to do better, either a proper refurb or get a new one ( pref not needing a separate key to the body locks ).

Any suggestions ?

Thanks, thats a great idea.

@olddog - The powdered graphite is the best solution as long as the lock just needs lubricated: If you need a new cylinder a Skoda dealer can supply the correct key pattern given the chassis number.

Ken,  thats very interesting.
Do you know if they will supply just the lock barrel (c/w RFID immob sensor) ?
(  rather than the entire assy that is held in place by the pair of shear bolts )
