Oil / inspection service

What’s the difference between oil change service and a inspection service?

In an oil change service they change the oil and filter.

Some things need changing in x miles/or x months oil/filters whichever is the sooner.

In an inspection service they inspect parts of the car to see if anything needs changing.

Some things need checking/changing in x months only, not by mileage, eg:- brake fluid.

Some cars might have the oil and inspection service done at the same time once a year.

If you do higher mileage then the oil service could be more often than each year.

Hope this helps.

Cheers Falco. Do you know if it's possible to get the inspection service and the oil service changed to the same time interval at all?

Usually the "oïl change" service should be longer than the "inspection" or at least the same mileage.

My car is reset to 372 days to inspection & 720 days to oïl change after each service. (I'm on a variable service configuration)

I would suspect that you do short journeys or lots of start-stop driving & the ECU has determined that the oïl quality is affected thus requesting an oïl change before the inspection service.

When you have the "oïl change" service done, they will also reset the "inspection service" counters at the same time.

If you dont drive many kilometers, they will probably reset both to 372 days.

Otherwise, they will set inspection to 372 & oïl change to 720-something.

You can anyway ask for fixed interval or variable service interval. With the later you might be charged slightly more for the longer life oïl.

For a car doing short commutes, 3 times a week, amounting to 7000 miles a year, 1.4 DSG - what would be better  - fixed or variable ?

Fixed

About £80-£100 in my experience!

I recall a situation whereby both my cars required a service within a week. Car 1 (2014 1.2 TSi Rapid) was on fixed servicing and had an oil & filter change at £139. Car 2 (2014 2.0 TDi Yeti) was on variable servicing and also had an oil and filter change, but this time at a cost of £249. No other parts were changed and I was told the difference in cost related to the "extra checks" involved in a variable service.

I'd say variable.

I am just re-writing from the VW Erwin books the servicing fro my 1.4lt 140PS petrol with manual gearbox....

my car has the flexible service (Q16)  but I service based on fixed shorter & time based due to low mileage:-

Official VW for flexible Q16 is:---

After 2yrs or 30,000km, then every 1yr or 30,000km:

¨   Inspection service

Every 2yrs or 30,000km:

¨   Oil Change Service

Every 2yrs or 60,000km

¨   Dust & pollen filter (cabin filter): renew

After 3yrs, then every 2yr regardless of mileage:

¨   Brake & Clutch system: Change brake fluid

After 3yrs or 60,000km, then every 2yrs or 60,000km:

¨   Inspection service with expanded scope

Every 4yrs or 60,000km:

¨   Spark plugs: renew

Every 6yrs or 90,000km

¨   Air filter: Clean housing & renew filter element

That's all folks..not much!!!

diesel & DSG cars have other items to include in this list...

If not doing DIY servicing a maintenance  between Main Dealer 'Free Wash and Vacuuming, some consumables, looking, reporting and not much else do people really want to go 2 years without someone else checking a vehicles safety?

Do you not actually want to go to an Independent and get things serviced properly? Not just charged for maybe done, maybe not, money for old rope!

+1 for this.

My understanding of the "variable service" is not so that people can get they car serviced every 3 years, it is for fleet/taxis/long distance drivers so they dont need a service every 4-5-6 months.

Short distance drivers -> 1 year on fixed service

Long distance drivers -> ~1 year on variable service

I never understand the argument of saving €50 versus keeping your €25,000 car in good condition.

Hi All, my 2015 Superb 1,6 Tdi has just flashed on this warning on the dash ; - " Perimeter Filter "  Check manual.  I presume that "Perimeter Filter" means the cabin pollen filter? It has done 44'000 Klms, and has been serviced in main Skoda dealership every 15'000 Klms

Anyone else come across this?

Thanks, Jmreire.

Cabin filter

""Dust & pollen filter (cabin filter): renew

After 3yrs, then every 2yr regardless of mileage:""""

so a 2015 year model due about now...

Brake fluid first at 3 years and every 2 years,  unless environmental conditions might mean sooner.

As with the Pollen / Cabin filter,  every 2 years, but then nobody knows where or how you use your car, so more often might suit.

2015 model should have had Pollen Filter changed at a Major or Variable service so maybe in 2017.

Money for old rope Simply Fixed servicing, 3-10 years etc etc, participating in doing not much dealerships...

Charge the same price even if parts nor supplied and fitted.

Much obliged Freedom. Thanks for the info. It's just a strange naming convention "Perimeter Filter" ( Although maybe not do strange when you thing about it ) Still "Cabin Filter" would have been clearer, with less confusion. I have never heard of a Perimeter Filter before this......

Best Regards,

Jim

Thanks for the info fabdavrav, Now I know where I stand with it...problem was the name " Perimeter Filter"......it's a bit confusing, when a simple "Cabin Filter" would have done the job equally well, if not better !!!!  :)

Best Regards, Jim

after having VAG cars for 24yrs you get to know the weird ways....
