Rubbing noise

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Need some advice, recently my car failed it's mot on a cracked rear spring. Instead of buying 2 new rear springs I decided to buy a set of coil overs which I fitted lowering the car. I then realised that the car was to low so raised it up. Now since then I have been having issues at the front of the car, when I reverse of my drive it sounds as if the brakes are rubbing and it gets worse the closer to full lock I get. The sound and feeling seem worse at very low speeds (below 5 MPH) or when reversing down a drive, I also get a creaking noise (which I believe may be top mounts). I have since replaced drop links, lower ball joint, outer track rod end and front discs and pads (they needed doing anyway). Once I had done this the noise stopped for a few days but has since returned. My next option was to replace wheel bearings (although I can not detect on movement in them when jacked up.) Can anyone advise if this would be the next logical step or should I check anything else first as don't really want to replace anything else that doesn't need replacing.

Thanks for any help in advance.

How much did you lower the car? It sounds like it could be a tyre rubbing inside the wheelarch. Jack it up and look for scuff marks on the wheelarch liner.

Hi, I've checked the wheels arches and there is no signs of rubbing. Also checked the drop links for signs of rubbing against the driveshaft and no signs there Its lowered approx. 30-35 mm.

Its hard to explain because I can hear the rub but also feel it through the steering. Only way I can explain is it's like you if have a buckled bike wheel that catches the brake pad once a revolution its not a continuous rub. The only other thing I can think of is if the brake caliper is sticking and rubbing the disc, but as I said it doesn't appear to happen once I'm off the drive driving down the road at normal speeds (20+mph) (this could be down to road noise masking but I also don't feel it in the steering any more?)

30 mm is a pretty big drop. Have you had your camber settings checked since you lowered it? That sort of drop is enough to mess up the static camber.

Not yet, was going to get full alignment done after I had fixed the rubbing issue. Or do you think this may be a reason for it?
