2litre diesel VRS Octavia won't start when warm

Featured Replies

Monday , Ian moving house so I was hoping to be able to use the car to do most of it.

It starts fine from cold and runs fine when it is going, but if I turn the engine off when it is warm, it won't start.

I have to wait 40 mins or so for the engine to cool down, then it coughs a bit and will start.

Any ideas ?

May not be relevant on the Mk 11 but this was a common problem on the Mk 1 diesels and the cause is easy to check.

The car required a minimum cranking speed when warm and this was checked by the ECU. This check was bypassed with a cold engine.

The cause was a tired battery, poor or corroded connections at the starter motor, similar on the earth connection at the engine or a tired starter motor. The starter really needed to spin with a hot engine.

Just a thought.

Changed the battery yesterday, still doing  it.

Thanks.

@Ron1968 - That still doesn't disprove any of @pikpilot other suggestions.

Try replacing the cam position sensor

Took it to have diagnostic check.

It returned no faulty sensor, but he found the timing was out.

I have had the car since December, I bought it off a Ford dealer in my area. They told me it had been serviced and had the cam belt changed.

I can only guess it has been out since I've had it or it wasn't tensioned right and has jumped a few teeth.

The guy can do it Monday/Tuesday.

Once it is going it's fine.

Read that to start a warm engine the timing has to be right.

To start from cold and to run it doesn't.

if it's jumped a few teeth you'd be in major problems, Excess exhaust smoke, or rather a cloud of black smoke that reeks of unburned fuel, misfire, loss of power, struggling to start any temperature, heavy vibrations.

possible damage to the valves.  from what you're saying I'd very much doubt this.

very much sounds like hot start issue: like pikpilot said

The Engine needs to turn at 280 rpm or above to hot start.
A few issues can cause this
Old Battery.
Poor earth. (bi-pass from negative battery terminal to engine with jump lead to check earth)
Coolant temperature sensor worn out, will show working, but they wear out.
Relay 109 on the engine relay panel.

Just to throw something random in the mix. My superb II 170 diesel was having trouble with warm starts recently.

This was diagnosed as a faulty DMF and replaced under warranty (just under 3yrs old).

Monday took it to have the timing done. Got a call off the guy doing it on Tuesday.

He did the timing , then ran it till it was warm left it quarter of a hour , then started it.

Fired first time. Did that a few times , started

first time every time. Has been fine ever since. The guy doing it said it was about one tooth out.

Runs a lot better and quieter now.

Just seen thread and glad to see a relieved happy ending so soon, bet you're a happy chappy now!

Absolutely, plus it actually seems quieter and be running smoother.

The Ford main dealer I got it off changed the cam belt before I got it. Must have done a poor job of it.
