Cruise Control fuel economy

Featured Replies

My 2010 Octavia DSG 1.9TDI cruise control (CC) accelerates the car briskly (harshly?) by pressing the "+" option on the CC stalk.  I prefer a smoother albeit longer acceleration to cruising speed.  But I wonder if CC is not more economical than using my style, particularly when using the CC "res" option from low speeds.  Does anyone know?  Do Skoda/VW know?

I am not keen on the fast rate of acceleration or the delay either so I just use the accelerator pedal to get the higher speed at the rate I want and then press resume or set as appropriate.

I have not seen any improvement in mpg when using cruise control.

I would say the difference would be negligible. The difference would be using cruise on a long journey vs your own foot, cruise will always use more fuel as the car cannot read the road ahead to make smooth adjustments like you can.

Probably use a little more fuel on cc vs foot driving as said car will just chug along and well there is an incline it will put more fuel in, used the wife's car up to Scotland last year cc most of the way but wiffy doesn't like it, (never driven a car with cc so I was like a kid in a sweet shop). Get to 70mph and switch it on and read the road ahead.

I usually use CC for longer journeys but haven't seen a significant difference in fuel consumption.

I understand that fast acceleration is a concern. Well, overtaking also means something similar but I don't consider it a great impact on fuel consumption (unless you overtake all the time or the distance is rather short).

I know that the 23 miles between Perth & Stirling or route reversed which has Average Speed cameras that Cruise Control uses more fuel in any vehicle i drive on that route compared to not using Cruise Control.  Been trying it for years in different vehicles to see.

Bored trying it there, now i have 55 miles each way Dundee - Aberdeen to try it on, dual carriageway all the way and 70 mph limit all the way right time of night.

You have to try for yourself on routes you can make the comparison on, maybe brim the tank before doing the journey.

I too usually manually accelerate to close to the CC speed, then set/resume as appropriate.  I do see some increase in MPG using cruise control, however it tends to be at motorway speed, on relatively quiet stretches when lane changing isn't required, I also tend to keep my speed around 65MPH if I'm feeling eco :)
