I have Conti sport contacts tyres all round on my car, but the drivers side tyre has excessive wear on the ouside edge,  the track is fine as have had it checked, as anyone esle had this problem? is it a common fault?

Thanks

Had Conti's before the last swap - and they wore evenly.  If it's outside edge, it could be camber setting of the suspension.  Tracking only checks for straightness I think.

Do you regularly drive with a full load?  Does it only happen on one side of the car or one wheel?

If it's all outside edges, I would guess at it being camber related but I'm not a mechanic :)

The camber  setting is ok and that it checked when using the hunters alignment..

The wear it more on the driver side  front.

That wear is on the very extremities of the tread, almost on the sidewall. I can't see how something isn't hugely out of spec in your suspension geometry. You could put the rear on the front and see if it starts to do the same?

Yeah might swap them as see

Tyre wear seems heavy on Superb Estates, and worse on 4x4s.  I have gone through a set of Bridgestones in about 18k miles which isn't brilliant.  Rears worse than fronts and I notice the inner edges starting to wear worse.  I would also have suggested 4 wheel alignment but sounds like that has been done ?

I'm looking at a set of Crossclimate's next and will be booking in a for a 4 wheel alignment soon after.

Hoping to get to 20k miles before I am forced to change, now that we are through the worse of the winter....

I got about 17.5k out of the first set, and the tyre bloke said that was about normal these days, due to softer tyre compounds.  My Superb 2.0Tdi Estate has done just short of 45k now, and its on its 3rd set of tyres.  I've always had even wear on them though. Its a 15-plate (last of the MK2s)

Have them on my Superb 4x4 and on my Passat before that. The they wore evenly on my cars, but I really hated them. They were so freaken loud. Also, as the compound is a bit soft, they developed flat spots when the car sat for 1 month. Naturally, they were amazing loud after that.

Next week I will replace them and never buy conti tyres again.

Thanks, sounds like it is standard with the Superb, so I am about typical wear.  Will see what I can push them to before I have to change...!  Below 3mm never brilliant.....

I have Michellin's (can't remember the specific type) on at the moment, they were changed in Late Jan/Early Feb 18 and don't seem to be wearing as quickly as the Conti's  Quite a bit quieter as well :)

Michelin is what I am fitting as well. In the old days I always Jeeps or pickup trucks and always fit BFG All-Terrains and never needed to concern myself with noise.

Thinking about swapping my Superb out for a Triton next month, should the wife agree.

Back to the OPs question.  Fast wear is not unusual for conti tires since they use a softer compound. Uneven ware is not normal. Likely you should check the alignment.

My poverty spec 2014 S model wore it's original Continentals very well but did scrub the rear inside edge of the tyres somewhat on a long run through France fully laden with people and luggage. With the independent rear suspension you seem to get more negative camber when loaded up. Front tyre wear has alway been even though.

Saying that I still did get over 35k miles out of the original set (205/55 R 16)

I've also been running a set of winters (Conti ts850) since I bought it and my "summers" are now Michelin Crossclimates. Probably when the ts850's wear out I'll probably just stick to the Crossclimates as they are fabulous.

Also running a 2014 poverty spec on crossclimates and they have really transformed the handling and driving experience. I can't imagine changing to something else after these.

Indeed - I've also found them really quiet.

ours came with contis which were fairly new and i must say they are the worst tyres i have ever used every time you hit a cats eye the whole car almost lurched for some reason i cannot understand, it happened when both my wife and i drove changed to some Hankook V12 evo2s which i have had on a couple of cars they are  much better

If everything on the car is ok then its possible you have heavily crowned roads as the drivers side outer edge takes the brunt of the weight it will wear more have a look at other local cars, quick tip if you buy a jap import they are all set up specifically to counteract this and will pull to the right as delivered as the jap roads are heavily crowned

I assume you have had the ball joints and wheel bearings looked at as well?
