MPG And Differences between 1.8 TSI and 2.0 TSI

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm thinking about getting a 1.8 TSI or 2.0 TSI VRS Octavia.

Just wondering about a few things.

Is MPG much better on 1.8 TSI ? I know it depends on how heavy your right foot is :)

Other than the obvious hp difference and I guess harder suspension on VRS any other main differences like bigger brakes etc on VRS ?

I'm half tempted to go for 1.8 TSI for the improved MPG as hear you can get 40 on a run. Then remap it , 17in alloys,  new intake and exhaust and upgrade the springs n shocks etc to make it go and handle better but with improved MPG over a VRS. I like the idea of a sleeper.

My current MPS is terrible on fuel 30  on a run max and probably 20 around town and need something cheaper to run.

Appreciate your thoughts !

I own a 1.8Tsi, fuel economy around town for me isn't great ,roughly low to mid 20's, but on a run it hit's around 40-43mpg, motorways is where it's happyist.

Look for as late a car as possible, as the later engines have better reliability in regards to the timing chain tensioner's (see sticky at the top of the sub forum) both 1.8 and 2.0 Tsi's effected, if the chain jumps it can and often does destroy the engine.

Early 1.8 tsi also has a drink problem (loves a drop of oil), due to bad piston ring design, if it's using up to a litre of oil in 500 miles or so then it needs rebuild or replacing, later 1.8 tsi's had a revised piston, piston ring and gudgen pin design so shouldn't suffer.the newer piston can't go in the earlier engines as the bore is slightly different.

After saying this they are a jem of an engine, plenty of power out of the box, and so smooth on the power delivery,

2011 TSI dsg here.  Can get mid 40's on a run, with comfort and smoothness. The only thing I don't like about the car is the seat squabs with no support for right leg. Performance wise, the 1.8 sits between the petrol and diesel VRS. Mine uses about 1L of oil every 5000 miles but it only does long journeys, mostly sitting at 70.

I have a 2012 1.8tsi manual,

Around town (when driving normally) I will see mid 30's... However on some shorter journeys (my 4 minute commute to work) I'll sometimes get just below 30 even when driving sensibly.

I regularly do a 200 mile journey to see relatives and if I drive efficiently I have seen as high as 48 average, with round about 43 being a good overall average for motorway driving.

Can't speak on the 2.0, but the 1.8 certainly can be efficient when needed.
