Car insurance for Children

Featured Replies

Whats the best way to go about insuring a third family car for family use, the main driver being a child (17) and what insurance companies can you recommend.

Ta.

The sooner they start building a no claim discount the better so getting there own insurance is probably the best although very expensive.......they can go on your insurance but if they loose your no claims how would you or they feel .........try talking to your insurance company some, like Direct line link insurances to make it a bit cheaper (i.e. all from one family so you get a discount)

Girls are cheaper to insure than boys for some reason...best bet, get a safe old banger (that if something happens to it you junk it and buy another) and insure it third party for a year or two until the insurance goes down

If I understand the ad correctly, Direct Line allow named drivers to accrue NCD. I dont know if this NCD is then recognised by other insurers though.

Just a thought: Car insurance never used to cover personal injury of driver, even on fully comp, so that injury compensation would have to be claimed on separate personal accident insurance. Might be different if another driver was at fault.

Can anyone clarify please as to usual cover (or lack of) in these more competitive insurance times. Thinking kids are worth more insurance protection expenditure than cars.

Yep , if you have been a named driver on a DL policy and then want to take out your own insurance with DL they will give you NCB for the number of years that you were named and claim free.

Once you have had a policy in your own name you can then transfer it to someone else but that'll be a couple of years before you can do this.

Personally I'd just get a cheap group 2 car like a Ka and start from scratch.

Tesco were quite good when I was out on my mum's insurance as a learner driver. I now have my own so I can build up NCB and I'm with Admiral, they're really good for young drivers - I'm 19 and have fully comp insurance with them on a brand new car with my mum and dad as named drivers!

More Than GAVE me a years NCB when I started with them on my first fabia at the age of 21. :) Kicked me off nicely.

think it might ahve been churchill i looked at, but i put myself in using a provisonal license, 17 years old, female, and tried getting insurance for toms fabia vrs (no mods declared) and ti came up with

I put the W.O. on my insurance (Direct Line ) as a named driver, and she builds up NCB , I understand that this is commonplace with certain insurers

The insurance on my GT was cheaper after adding Tracey onto it. Sub £300 fully comp.

i know i wouldnt be able to afford a fabia vrs, i know it makes no sense putting me as main driver on toms car but i was just showing that it made alot of difference. churchill have been quite cheap compared to other insurance companies when rooting around for insurance prices for a felicia. most gave out about

When our girls initially started driving we put them on our insurance because they were just borrowing our cars. Soon after that they bought their own cars and our eldest went third party on an old micra and it cost her £400 + to start with. Our other daughter had a 1.9 Peugeot 205 and that cost her £580 to go third party. We shopped around loads to find the best quotes, they can vary from year to year, at that time Direct Line and Tesco were the most competitive. Apparently we were lucky that we had girls because insurance for lads can be lots more. It certainly is an expensive part of having kids. Both girls now have newer cars and are on fully comp, but they add our names as for some reason this makes their insurance cheaper. Can anyone explain why that is?

My son who is 18 and stays in Bainsford just got his first car. Fiat Punto 1.2 active Sport thing, 53 plate £1800 fully comp from Bell Direct. This was the cheapest we could find. It was a couple of hundred pounds more expensive without me as a named driver for some reason.

A £500 Hyundai was going to cost £950 tpft.

Interestingly he put his workmates address in a quote, knocked £600 of the price - and he stays in Bo'ness!!

I'm FK1 also, may try a couple of different areas to see the difference.

I'll try and get a few different quotes, but for sure adding a mature driver to the policy drops it by 50% for starters.
