Best 1.6 tdi MPG?

Featured Replies

What's the best mpg you've got out of your 1.6 diesel guys? I only managed 55 yesterday driving as steadily as I could back from collection.

I ran one of these for around 1 year (8.5k miles), in the expectation the MPG would better the 1.9 TDi it replaced.

In practice it proved to be less economical than the older tech 1.9 TDI and I never really got on with the (relative) lack of low-down torque. The 1.6 CR engine was certainly quieter than the older 1.9 PD engine, but it was a car / engine combo that didn't work for me and I quickly moved it on.

According to my archived Fuelly information it averaged 46.6 MPG and had a best of 52.2 MPG and worst of 38.4 MPG. More here: http://www.fuelly.com/car/skoda/roomster/2012/pinkpanther/105329

Mine is the 105PS version of the 1.6TDi.  I don't make any extreme efforts to drive economically (ie "hypermiling") because I find that giving it a good thrashing every now and again gives better mpg over the long term.

Average mpg over just short of 49k miles and 5yrs ownership from new, is 54.9mpg using fill-up data and 56.9mpg using trip computer data.

Best ever over a tankful is  62.6mpg based on actual fuel usage with the trip computer claiming 63.3mpg.

Worst ever over a tankful is 47.6mpg based on actual fuel usage with the trip computer claiming 50.3mpg.

Getting below 50mpg over a tankful is a rare occurrence limited to winter driving when I do more town driving than long trips.  My summer average is around 56mpg, winter average around 52mpg

I regularly see 70+ mpg on the trip computer especially on motorway trips that include extensive 50mph speed limit sections!

I ran a 105hp 1.6 CR Tdi for nearly 5 years.

I did 44308 miles at average 56.14 mpg on regular diesel fuel. That's based on fuel purchase records, not the computer.

I now have a petrol 1.2Tsi DSG that has done 17508 miles at 45.1mpg.

This means I buy around 40 extra gallons of fuel per year since moving to petrol.

Both cars are driven broadly on the same sort of journeys, at the same sort of speeds. I live and drive mostly in a flat part of the country. It is noticeable in my petrol Roomster how much the consumption is hammered when ascending hills, according to the instantaneous consumption display; much less effect in the diesel.

I gave up on the diesel because of problems with the DPF, but prefer it to the petrol for "urge". (and range per tank of course)

If you look at this German site you can see Europe wide consumption figures for any model of car, as reported by owners.

https://www.spritmonitor.de/en/

There is quite a wide spread of figures recorded on the site, obviously affected by driving style, environment (temperature and gradients) and journey types.
