New car - What's signed when and process for pre-delivery checks

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

I recently booked a new car on PCP, the car was a prebuilt vehicle in the Skoda yard in Germany. Paid the initial £1000 deposit and signed the vehicle order form.

Just heard from the dealer that the car has now landed in the port in the UK and should be at the dealership towards the end of the coming week. Was asked if I can come over to sign the final finance paperwork.

Since this is the first time I'm buying a new car in the UK I need some advice on what's the best process forward.

1. What should be signed and when?

2. Should the vehicle be inspected before signing the finance paperwork?

3. Or is it okay to sign the finance paperwork now and inspect the vehicle before I take delivery?

4. Am I allowed to test drive the car before I accept delivery? Should that be before it's registered to my name as a registered keeper? Or after it's registered and prior to delivery?

5. What checks should be conducted?

I found that Gyuilajo has a nice comprehensive list below, please feel free to suggest anything else that may be needed.

Thanks in advance...

Regards,

Rony

With regard to (2) and (3) there is no need to inspect the goods before signing as the Consumer Credit Act gives you protection via statutory rights.

Specifically, you can cancel a credit agreement at any time before you sign the agreement or within 14 days of signing it.

You don’t have to give a reason.

So if you've signed an agreement and upon inspecting your new pride and joy you notice something wrong, you can reject the car and simply cancel the agreement.

The obvious golden rule is: don't sign a credit agreement if your dealer can't promise to provide you with your car within 14 days!!
