Buying 2013 Octavia mkIII - things to look out for

Featured Replies

Looking to buy low miles 2013 Octavia hatch 2.0 TDI (150bhp) Elegance. Pretty good condition, low miles (28k). Will it need a timing belt change as it's 5 years old?

Also what else to look out for and what to do to make the car even better, mods, customising settings etc.

About a year ago, I bought a high mileage (70k) '63 reg Octavia Elegance 2.0 dirty diesel DSG. 6 months later the water pump shredded itself into pieces so I changed the timing belt + water pump at 4 and a bit year old. Just be aware of this fault on this engine, you'll need to budget a timing belt + water pump change.

Being a diesel, I'd be nervous with a low mileage car. Bring along a OBD2 scanner and buy VW DPF app on Android. You'll be able to see how much life the DPF has left. I'd expect less than 15g oil ash residue (my one is at 28g IIRC)

Test drive it to ensure you are okay with the ride due to wheel and rear suspension setup. I'm usually okay with the upgraded 18inch wheels, but sometimes do wish it is the standard 17inch versions, or even 16inch from SE spec.

I can't think of any other problems you might have. Hopefully others can chime in.

Yeah, good idea about the scanner. I'd expect it's been pooled around a lot and needs a bit of an "Italian tune-up". Seemed to drive OK. Ride a bit harsher than my golf but that's to be expected on the 17" rims. Will factor in a timing belt/water pump change. Cheers.

Actually it must be 18" rims (Golus), pretty sure Golus is 18"?

Yes, Golus are 18inches, I have it on my car. They look nice but the ride is harsh due to '40 sidewall.

16inch have '55 sidewall...... I think prefer that........... anyway.

Check this thread on tolerances:

Not sure how to do it via VCDS or OBD11, sorry.

It's a little awkward to find what you're looking for on there. When I'm home later I'll have a look what I done (as I can't remember) and post back.

@JohnnyType2 right as promised.

This menu which I am navigating you to has everything and anything to do with the engine. It's live data as well, as my 'soot mass calculated' went up by 0.01g when I was sorting the screenshot out.

First of all, go on to ' Select Control Module'

Then click onto '01-Engine'

On the 'Basic Functions' section on the bottom left, you click onto ' Adv. Meas. Values'

And then the below menu will appear. On the box on the right hand side, you just need to type in whatever it is you're wanting information for and then tick the box, so the relevant information appears in the results box on the left hand side. I started typing particle in (dpf doesn't bring up a lot) and I selected the bits you can see below. Soot mass and oil ash mass are the main ones to be concerned with. As is the time since last one and what the temperatures are (I'd imagine they'd be considerably higher after driving a bit. I only turned the car over on the drive)

Hope this is of use to you all.

it is Ian thanks.

Ive seen the process of pro DFP cleaning which involved pressurised cleaning solution forced through the DFP using a specialised machine.

Meh, can't get ODB2 dongle to work, cheap ebay rubbish, bought car now anyway so ... what the hell. Would VCDS lite work perhaps?

Well finally managed to get this to work and it is less than 15g ... so that's good right?

That's spot on.

28750 miles / 11.1g = 2600 miles per 1g of additional oil ash

2600 miles/g * 60g = 156k total miles of life in the DPF before seeing symptoms described in the first post of thread I linked above.

So your DPF should have more than 120k miles of life left before you have to worry about it (as long as you do oil changes on schedule)

Happy days, that's one load off my mind  :)
