2009 Scout 2ltr TDi-noise going over bumps

Featured Replies

Hi All, drove the car this morning and there was a banging/ growning noise from the rear, just jacked it up and I didn't find anything loose on either side, when I dropped the car down I dropped it down quick and the offside made a growning which I presume is the shock absorber ? Just going to take it for a test drive to see if I can narrow it down. Cheers Stuart

Do the bump stops make this noise ?

Hi All, Managed to fit one shock absorber but on the second one the lower bolt is a pain as it wont go in straight as the spring is in the way as the extra long bolt comes out even after using a spring compressor you cannot get a spanner in ! also changed the bump stops, please see attached pics as there is a driveshaft in the way on the scout, I am suspecting a bush under the control arm ? that the spring is mounted on (see pic) anybody know what its called or a part number ? cheers Stuart

All you need to do is jack up under the lower wishbone, undo wishbone bolt, lower jack to release spring tension.

Then you have access to the shock bolt and you don't need to faff around with spring compressors

After you have done the shock, pop the spring back in and raise the lower arm with the jack until you can get the bolt in. Simples

Thanks for that I will try it tomm  I did try to support the wishbone and hammer it back but the bolt was solid,  do you know what the bush is called at the end as I presume its seperate and replaceable ? cheers Stuart

Before you go replacing bushes I would give them all a good spray with a silicone based lube. There is likely plenty of life left in the bush they just sometimes get a bit dry and creaky

Hi thanks for that, I bought some bushes thinking they were worn but when I dropped the arm they were solid so I didn't change them, just waxoiled some metalwork on each side so I will put the car back on the road in the morning and have a test drive to see if the noise has gone ! ps  I presume if I needed to change the bushes they would press out ? cheers Stuart

Well I have changed both shock absorbers complete with bump stops and its stopped one sound but there still is a metallic sound ! I jacked the car up and shook the exhaust and the mountings and everthing looked OK as I thought it could be that hitting the body, The only thing I can think of now is either the anti roll bar mounts or the drop links on the rear axle ? it tends to knock when going over speed bumps ! anybody any ideas ? cheers Stuart

Still have the noise and it sounds like a mettalic banging, so I am thinking of exhaust against bodywork, although I have been underneath and pushed and pulled the pipe and cannot get any banging, might try reversing the car up some ramps to keep the rear axle up and then try the exhaust again ! Any common probs with the rear axle on the Scout ? Cheers Stuart

I would check the rear anti roll bar drop-links for movement and have a good look if any of the rear coil springs might be broken on the bottom of the rear control arm.
