Knocking and clicking sound when going from forwards to backward

Recommended Posts

Hi there any help on this will be much Appreciated, I've noticed a knocking sound coming from what seems to be the passenger side of the engine bay of my 62 plate cr tdi vrs, the noise seems to happen most when I am going from forwards to reverse and then applying the throttle, I've also herd the odd clicking sound whist braking and pulling away, my thoughts are mabey bottom front wishbone or struts but also I must say the car is a dsg and the dmf does rattle when idling once warmed up, could the knocking be the dmf when I'm going from forwards to reverse? Anybody else had a knocking noise coming from dmf whist going from forwards to reverse? Also ,if it is bottom front wishbone, are the ones on the vrs the same as a normal MK2 Octavia and also if I replaced the bottom arms would the 4 wheel alignment need Doing again. A lot of questions there I know, just hoping someone has had some similar symptoms I can realate to, thanks again for any help in advance

You could try getting someone to stand and look at the wheel to see if it moves forwards or backwards and listen for a clunk.

A mean moving forwards or backwards not going round forward or backwards it could give you a better indication of what could be wrong thats if it is the wishbone.

Hope it helps

Thanks for reply, sound advice, tbh it's at the stage were I think I'm going to have to let it develop as it's just started doing it, just hope it's not the dmf giving up, £££££ haha, do you know if I would need to have alignment done if I changed wishbones and also are wishbones same across all MK2 Octavia's? Thanks again for any help

Am sorry a cant comment on if they are the same across the mark 2 octavia all a do no is some are cast and some are steel.

As of alignment it is best to get the alignment corrected after fitment or checked.

If you can get someone to look at the wheel as you do what you do to get the noise that would rule out if it's the wishbone or DMF.

Hope this helps and you get sorted.

Try parking, engine off, open passenger door and stand on the inner sill. Kind of jump/bounce up and down, listening for any clicks or knocks. This might help eliminate suspension sounds from engine/gearbox and driveshaft ones. Try drivers side too, of course! You will really need to give it some beans unless it clunks at first try!  (Nine stoners need not try, get a 'ahem', bigger friend to do the bouncing).

@Catzeye - Er, I'm fairly sure that a dsg box does not have a single dmf.

I'm pretty sure the 6speed dsg does have a dmf, someone correct me if I am wrong

Good idea, seems as if the dull knock is coming from the passenger side and the clicking from the right hand side front, it's in for mot soon so hopefully they might find the problem

It will have 2 dmfs or none. DSG technology requires 2 clutches.

I’m sure you can find the DMF cheaper then what Skoda want

Ah know m8, could have killed her!!! Yeah I've had a quote from a transmission specialist before 600 pound fitted, I'm just wondering if they would need to take anything off whilst doing the dmf that I would need to get the 4 wheel alignment done again!?

Cheapy ones do (ebay search)

Osram seem to get down to 31mm, so it may be possible to squeeze one of the those in, depending on the amount of wiggle room is in there.

If it's tricky to reassemble I would suggest you are doing it wrong.

The dmf is definitely rattling, had a good listem last night and when the engine is hot or when you 1st start it up it's rattling like mad, soon as you select drive it goes away so defo needs doing, just wondering if that would cause my dull knocking noise whist going from forwards to reverse
