Diesel filter - fuel seeping through top of housing

Featured Replies

Hey,

I have been ignoring some fluid that's been sitting on the top of the fuel filter on my 06 octavia 1.9tdi for some time. I had assumed it was water from washing the car. I have since noticed that its actually diesel. I dried up the fluid and then started the car and noticed that it is seeping (albeit very very slightly) through the top of the filter house around one of the inlet pipes.

Assuming the best course of action here is to replace the top of the filter housing? Been looking on eBay but there appears to be quite a few different models.

Can anyone advise on which models will be suitable for my needs?

Part number attached in photos.

Many thanks

You might be very lucky to get just the top, otherwise its the whole filter housing.

Hope this helps,

Trev

The part number should find the correct eBay one. New they cost a fortune.

Thanks guys.

Will take a look through ebay. Cars got over 200k miles on the clock and this year will probably be its last so don't want to fork out for a brand new one.

Looks like a common part accross the  vw brands. Seems to return seat Leon when searching in eBay. Assume if the part number matches it will be the correct one? Sounds a stupid question (and probably is) but thought best check first.

Thanks again

A bit of maintenance would of made it last forever

My one came up on the service once several thousand miles back for corrosion on the top. I decided to used Kurrust on it. Currently on 228k. Ate all the rust as promised and went a nice black colour. Maybe had to reapply it once again since.

Notice some of these on other VAG cars have a more stainless/chrome top. The position does not lend itself well to sitting water from driving on motorways and even washing the car. Water just sits at the top.

Do note the danger of diesel leaking onto the cambelt as it's very close and can cause other expensive damage. Some leak from the lid seal itself where the fuel filter seal has not been fitted correctly.

It might be a god idea to replace the Aux belt once the leak is sorted in case its contaminated with diesel, if it breaks it can take the cam belt with it,

A terrible design... I've heard that rust can find its way into fuel system via corroded tops and foul the injectors necessitating removal and cleaning.

As mentioned previously, clean it up and apply some rust stop/converter.

Then you can assess whether you want to buy a new/used part or doctor it.

Personally I'd just clean it up and apply a liberal amount of fibre glass body filler, no oxygen no rust. Epoxy resin or similar will do as long as it's safe with diesel.

In any case a good repair will probably outlast the car anyway, be careful you may easily burst the thin metal as it is already corroded. Probably best to remove the top to work on so you don't push material into the system.  You needn't remove the hoses.

Check the pictures out buddy part numbers are on there just put part numbers into google or eBay and you should get a hit
