Fumes from oil filler.

Featured Replies

Had to top up the oil for the first time between services. Put in about 1/2 litre.

I did it after a normal motorway run  & then a few miles in a built up area.

Took the cap off and was surprised to see fumes.

Is this normal on a 1.6 tdi with 47k on the clock?

Thanks.

Did you see some smoke?   Heat and an oily smell is normal, it is engine oil.

As to the top up of 0.5 of a litre, was that because you dipped the oil at operating temp and it showed as needing 0.5 litre, was 0.5 litres enough when checked again?

or had you had a Low Oil warning light?

Was it the correct oil used,  VW 507 00.  5w 30 FS LL.

How often do you check the oil and when was the Oil and filter changed last?

As above. Normal with a hot engine. Don't just rely on the low oil level warning light and check it regularly.

It was the low oil level warning light that came on & I used the one litre bottle that came with the car.

It's due for an oil change in about 3000 miles.

Just worried that it was engine wear.

Thank you for the replies.

I would be dipping that oil again with stone cold oil, parked on the flat,

then again after at least 10 miles and the oil at 'Normal Operating temperature', as all VW engines are supposed to be checked other than the 1.2 44kw which is checked cold. 2.8 litre oil capacity.

see where it is on the dipstick, because 0.5 litres top up might still have you running well below the required oil quantity if you had a 'Low Oil warning' light or message.

Good point, thanks
