Which one is 'Sensor 2'? SOLVED

Featured Replies

I’m after a bit of advice.

Last summer whilst on a long road trip with the family, the EML popped up on the dash.  I always have a Carista OBD reader plugged in and it said P0036 and P0141.  I cleared the codes and we carried on with the holiday.

The codes and EML have been appearing every now and then since, but over the last few weeks the EML has been on about four times.  I am wanting to replace ‘Sensor 2’ but wondered which one that is - the one in the down pipe or the sensor further back?

I need to mention that the car is fitted with a Tony Banks Turbo back exhaust system that ran perfectly well for ten months before this happened.

If anyone can tell me which ‘Sensor 2’ is I’d be grateful.  I’d also be really appreciative if someone could give me the OE part number as our local Skoda dealership will fit one but they won’t give me the part number.  It’s a job I can tackle myself but I need the correct part code to see if there’s a Bosch alternative that doesn’t cost £156, which is what the parts department at Skoda quoted.

Below is the info from an OBD scan done ten minutes ago.  Any help/advice would be brilliant as I would like to sort this out before we do any road trips this summer.

Thanks in advance.

P0139 Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor Bank-1 Sensor-2 , Slow Response

P1114 Bank 1 – Sensor 2, Internal Resistant too High

P0140 Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor Bank-1 Sensor-2, No Activity Detected

Edit : I managed to get a photo of the top sensor and it seems to be reasonably accessible if the engine cover is removed.

A big thanks to Wino for giving me the info I needed.  Sensor 2 is the second of the two (sounds logical now).  I've just taken a photo of the offending item and have located the Bosch replacement online.

Again, Briskoda comes to the rescue!

Just out of interest, is that decatted exhaust system? Or is the cat still in place? The lambda sensor seems to be fitted in an extension. I would have expected it to be closer to the flow of the exhaust gases.

It's fitted with a 200 CEL sports cat.  To be honest, I'd never really considered where the sensor was until very recently.  I'd assumed that Tony Banks knew what he was doing and that it's a tried and tested system.

I'll be interested to see  if the codes come back when the new sensor is fitted.

Cool, thanks. Hopefully just a simple lambda probe change wil sort it. Good luck and keep us posted.

I thought an update on this might be useful to people for future reference.

I bought the sensor and handed it over to my usual garage to fit,  but they said it was wrong.  I wasn't convinced about this so rather than take it back, I did some more research and even managed to get the OEM part number from Skoda.  It kept coming back to the Bosch sensor above so I set about fitting it.  Unfortunately, the old sensor was rusted onto the spacer so I had to refit it 'till I got hold of a spacer from Ebay.

Five pounds later I had the spacer and set about fitting the new sensor and spacer.  It only took 15 minutes the second time round as I knew what I was doing.  I reset everything with the Carista OBD reader and app and so far, so good.  I've been out in the car with different driving styles, loaded the engine in different ways in different gears and at the moment no more error codes have popped up.  Beforehand, the codes were ever present and would instantly come back a minute or so after resetting the OBD reader.  I'm hoping this has sorted the issue as it had been niggling me for months.

Since fitting the sensor, the car is running smoother.  This is a bonus but one downside is that the exhaust pops and burbles ever so slightly less than it did.  I've yet to do a long run in the car so that'll test the system again.

I thought I'd post this so that people know that this sensor works and that there's a record of the part number.
