Not sure why you would think it is a backward step since most owners and users seem very happy with existing smoothness, economy/performance of the engine.

Why add complication and weight where it is not required?

Having owned several 3-cylinder engined cars with balancer shafts (VAG and non-VAG) and test driven some without I find those without to have noticeably worse engine rpm related vibration which for me makes them seem rough - so IMHO the balancer shafts are essential.

 

Other opinions are available and respected.

That's an interesting claim, given all the discussion here about replacement intervals.
