Skoda Kodiaq 2.0 190 TDI (Sportline) Economy

Featured Replies

Afternoon All,

I've only had my Kodiaq for about a month with around 600 miles completed to date.  I've been doing a lot of short journeys but also some slightly longer journeys of around 50 miles and noticed on possibly one occasion I managed to achieve a shade over 40 mpg.  Is anyone else experiencing a similar issue? I've mostly been achieving around 29-33mpg with the car mainly in Drive mode and without any aggressive driving or anything more than 2 adults and 3 children in the car (under 7).  I drive a Honda Civic 2.2 TDI for commuting to work on which I'd easily achieve approx 45 mpg whilst driving in a similar manner.

I'm hoping it improves as time goes by but currently I feel disappointed as I'm not achieving anywhere near what I should be according the the guides.

Thanks

Hello...

First of all, you don’t say what engine / gearbox / drivetrain combination you have, so it’s difficult to know what you’re aiming at. Secondly, at only 600 miles you’re still in the ‘running in’ period where economy is always less than it should be.

And finally, comparing a Civic to a Kodiaq is pointless... they are completely different cars in terms of size, weight and just about everything else.

edit: ignore my first point, I missed the topic title :blush

Diesels don't like short journey's. More fuel is used to get the engine up to operating temperature, as it generally takes longer than with petrol engines.

Your journey types mean that at 600 miles your car has probably already completed (or attempted to complete) two active DPF regenerations. These hurt fuel economy and over such low mileage will be adversely affecting your average fuel economy.

As above, 600 miles is very new, the engine has not yet loosened up enough to realise the full fuel economy potential.

I'd be very impressed with 40mpg in a 2 ton Kodiaq, especially if I was only getting 45mpg in a much lighter, smaller Honda Civic on the same routes.

It's a big, 7 seater, flat-fronted SUV riding on 20" alloys stacked full with power hungry electrical systems. I'd hope fuel economy was well down the list as you came through the decision making process.

I'm assuming your "29-33mpg" is from the cars on-board computer? Take this with a pinch of salt. Brim the tank, reset the trip meter. Run the car to the red, refill to the brim, note the miles covered and quantity of fuel used and manually calculate your fuel economy.

Finally, never take the manufacturers quoted fuel economy figures as being remotely achievable.

Enjoy the car (especially the SportLine's seats) and forget about fuel economy would be my advice.

Thanks for pointing out the size difference, I merely mentioned that as a point of how I was driving the vehicle.  I've been reading on the forums of other drivers obtaining more so wanted to get an idea if this was just because its still fairly new as mentioned above or whether there are some differences amongst the Kodiaq's.

I was hoping for some fuel economy as that's the argument I swayed the wife with when I brought the car

Thanks guys, I have been enjoying it too as pleasantly surprised how good a car it is but thought I'd raise this point as was niggling me somewhat...you are right, it is the onboard computer so will try and give that a shot...

Give it a bit more time I think is what's needed here. I'd hope that by 3,000 to 5,000 miles you should see an improvement.

There are so many variables that affect fuel economy its often difficult to compare apples-to-apples. Most of those variables are external (road surface, ambient temperature, wind speed, tyre condition, winter fuel) the list is literally endless.

Top effort on persuading the wife the Kodiaq would be a match for the Civic on fuel consumption!

Skoda have improved, but on my ageing Skoda Superb the on-board computer is roughly 10-15% optimistic.

What length journeys are you doing? My experience so far of the 190 diesel is that it takes 6 or more miles at A road speeds for the water temperature to hit normal, and longer for the oil to reach operating temperature. In my experience, it’s not until the car is up to temperature that it starts returning 40+mpg.

If you’re doing short low speed urban journeys with lots of stop start, then fuel economy beginning with a 3 sounds about right, and a petrol engine would perhaps be more appropriate.

Attached is a copy of mine. I’m running the same engine as yours on my Edition.

I've being doing mostly around 8 miles but have been doing a number of journeys around 19 miles with an economy of around 32-33 mpg.

I've checked mine, not included photo as on a computer but its showing as:

Distance: 618

Travelling time: 20:10h

Average speed: 30 mph (mainly due to collecting my car from approx 240 miles away)

Average consumption: 35.3 mpg

As the others have mentioned, I presume it will get better as time goes by but will try and focus more on the driving then mpg

I get anywhere from 35-40mpg from my Kodiaq 190PS 4x4

Thanks, I believe it should get better as it's still a small amount of mileage..

This is the best I've gotten, I think 46mpg.

That is impressive for such a big car, but it definitely seems the longer you go (e.g. over 60-70 miles) it gets better.  I did 248 miles and I think my economy was around 40mpg but that was the first day I picked it up!

In the end, just enjoy the car! Rather pay a few more quid at the gas station with a smile than drive like a grandma!

It’s very variable depending on driving conditions. With less than 500 miles on the clock, I saw 50mpg on one gentle 25 mile A road journey home, in warm weather last week. This morning taking my wife to the station was an 11 mile round trip, 12C, and after the first 3miles of A road was stop start urban driving (not much traffic, but lots of traffic lights). The car was only just showing 40mpg by the time I pulled back on to the drive. If I’d stopped driving after 6 miles, it would have given economy of 35mpg. It doesn’t seem to like short stop start journeys, particularly if you have a heavy right foot. Not really a surprise for a big heavy car with a cast iron block engine.

Thanks everyone for your feedback, I was hoping it would help others who may have thought the same to lean from fellow drivers experiences.

I definitely like the ride height and the fact I've not seen too many on the roads around here..
