Randomly opening tailgate

Featured Replies

I know there is already an old thread about this, but it runs to four pages and includes at the beginning speculation about what's causing this when it's now clear. So I thought it would be more useful to start a new thread and summarise what's in the older thread.

What's established there is that it is caused by pressure on the keyfob in the pocket; it's difficult to establish a fault at dealers because it happens randomly and Skoda have so far not been prepared to acknowledge the problem and address it; there is currently no means of removing the functionality of the tailgate button on the fob via VCDS without losing functionality of the button in the car also; some people recommend a case from Amazon ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00PVYHNQY/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1?tag=b0f1c-21) - though I and others find it seems too bulky; some have opened up the key fob and removed the peg behind the tailgate button.

I have experienced this problem and it's a PITA. A few times at home but also twice when I was travelling, which was much more concerning. I have decided to open up the fob and deal with it this way. Before I do so, though, I thought I would try and get some feedback on the efficacy and practicality (how to)  of doing this.

BTW from a quick search it's not a Skoda or a VW problem. I saw references to the same issue with Beemers and other makes.

I, once, was following my early morning schedule.  I got out of my home, entered my company's car and left for work. I don't use the superb to go to my work. Both cars are usually parked roadside outside my home. While i was driving by my superb, i turned my head to admire it as it was a few weeks old. A few moments later i stepped hard on the brakes as i realized that all the windows were fully open. I run to the car recalling that a few hours earlier there was heavy rain. The car was locked, the windows were fully open, but fortunately there was no sign of water inside the car.

I was standing beside my car, at 06:30 in the morning, wondering WTF had happened. I am still not sure. The only logical explanation i can think is that entering and sitting in my company's car, the open button on the keyfob (i had forgotten it in my front pocket alongside 2 flash drives) was pressed long enough to unlock the car and open the windows.  Since noone opened a door within 20-30 secs, the doors was locked again but the windows remained open. After that incident, i always have the keyfob all alone in my pocket. No other incident, but by don't having the electric tailgate, the only way to find that a button has been pressed is if the open button has been pressed long enough to open the windows. Otherwise the doors unlock and then lock back again and i never find it out.

That happened to me with my Yeti a few times. And the upholstery got damp on at least one occasion. It's linked to the ability to open all windows and doors at the same time by an extended push (I think ) on the fob. It's designed for summer days when you want everything open to cool the car down. Handy if it's hot. Not much use in the UK.:D But good for where you are, in the summer at least. You can turn it off in the vehicle settings - go to Opening and closing and turn off the convenience opening for windows. Mine's off now - but I'm actually driving down to Greece in the summer and I might well enable it there. The tailgate opening is more worrying as there's no way to disable it in the settings.

I reckon that I should have saved some money and bought another car with just the facilities I need. Until I read this post I did not know that the windows and sunroof open and shut if the appropriate knob is pressed for long enough on the key fob! This is perhaps the 5th or 6th time I have read a post and learned of some facility on the Superb which I did not know I had!

Have you tried pressing the accelerator all the way to the bottom?  The 280 has the sh*toffashovel-tronic feature as standard :tongueout:

It's not random, it happens when you press the button.

It's only a problem if you are not aware and do not manage the keys effectively.

My previous car a 2008 Mondeo did exactly the same thing global opening, so it's not a new phenomena.

Funnily enough, all in the interests of science,

I decided to demonstrate the feature to my 10 year old twin grandsons last week. One of them commented during this " Whoa it is just like Back to the Future"!!!

The window opening from the fob can be disabled in the menu, just FYI.

If you're being pedantic, then no it's not random - it obviously happens when pressure is applied to that part of the button inadvertently or otherwise. However, when it occurs unpredictably, without your knowledge, when the key is 'safely' located in your pocket I think it fair to describe it as random. I also think it fair to have the expectation that  you should be able to put the key in your pocket without any risk of accidentally triggering the tailgate opening.
