Octavia vrs tappets

Featured Replies

Good evening . I’ve had my 2008 vrs cr 170 for a couple of months now . Can’t fault the car . The only thing I have slight concerns about is the tappets when cold . Quite noisy especially noticeable when the window is down . Goes away after 2-3 miles .

Car has a impeccable service history and has covered 110k . Should I be concerned or is this just due to the oil draining out the hydraulic lifters ?

Thanks for helping

@Darcyvrs - When was the last service? These engines are "quietly tappety" when cold and a service is due.

Hi ken , Service was 6 months ago but only 3000miles . Quantum oil was used .

i had a 1.9 pd tdi that used to be very tappety for 20 seconds then it was fine . This one seems to be noisy for longer . Once warm it’s quiet and lovely

@Darcyvrs - That might be part of the problem; you need 3 quanta of oil rather than 1! ;)

Seriously, what was the VAG 500 series spec number of the oil? $brand and/or $viscosity isn't enough info.

It’s had quantum longlife 3 5w30 fully synthetic which is OEM vw oil . It’s been changed every 7k or so .

Im sure it’s nothing to worry about as it gets quiet after a few miles
