Failed dry DSG, due to a blown internal seal

Featured Replies

On a Sept 2010 1.6TDI Octavia with 120,000 miles on.

I took the car to my local very good indy (but Citroen trained/biased/orientated), who made a few enquiring Ph calls, and said I should take her to a local auto transmission specialist.

Said auto transmission specialist made a balls of re-building a very basic MB auto transmission in a 1998 Gwagen for me 10 or 15 years ago, so hmmm?,

 I am not so sure?

I have just phoned  J. Mulhollands at R'Town to discuss and hopefully price this work.

I suppose it ud still be cheaper than shipping the car to Australia for their free outside-of-warranty DSG repairs?

Sigh

Well, looking at £1900.00 to £2000.00 to re-furbish, by the local auto trans indy.

Skoda not interested, &  absolutly no idea what the problem might be, unless I leave the car in on a blank cheque basis , which disgusts me   !

I have spent the afternoon, oh the joys of being retired, on the computer and the phone, and am hardly the wiser.

So a few questions for anyone interested.

Is it most likely to be the mechatronic unit? (and I have asked the mechanic to check)

Is it likely the clutch packs will also need replaced, or be prudent to replace them anyway?

If it is the mechatronic unit,  is it best to simply purchase a new replacment unit, and I have been quoted £1252 for a brand new mechatronic unit from TPS=VW stuff, apparently

Or get it exchanged/refurbished?

At least I am under no time pressure

Thanks, in anticipation,

Marcus, the hat

Thanks Longship.

So, I called up this morning and discussed,

took a photo,

it appears to be the mechatronic unit that is leaking,

& see att. image.

Fluid issuing from the round black plastic cover with the penny sitting on top,  leaking cover directly above the horizontally mounted filter and below the starter motor.

Looks straightforward to unbolt and replace, being aware of the requirement to ensure the levers/actuators are correctly positioned(with the computer tool?) before removal, before fitting the new unit.

But I will let James worry about that.

Well, no local indy interested, and a couple mentioned horror stories about working on these DSG transmissions/mechatronic units.

Finally got an inflated price out of J Mulholland, 5.5 hrs labour(and I cant/wont argue with that)

but quoted me £1676.00 for the mechatronic unit, after Paul* at Skoda UK had volunteered the mechatronic unit would cost me £1365.97**(incl VAT)

*I had to "sic" Skoda UK onto J. Mulholland's to even get a response/price, this after many/multiple unreturned ph calls.

**Not absolutly sure but certainly not the length of £1370.00

I did find;

 https://www.vagserviceandrepairs.co.uk/

and they sound like they know what they are doing, but I still need to speak to a named individual tomorrow re labour cost.

SO

Would anyone from NI like to volunteer an opinion re this firm.

pm if desired

thanks in anticipation

Hmmm, interesting and more interesting,

just had about an 1 hour long ph call from Skoda UK,

who have arranged for the Skoda NI area manager to contact us re J Mulhollands rcalcitrance in returning our ph calls re our DSG fault,(never mind their hiking of component costs).

Mind I near blew a gasket when Skoda UK asked why we had taken the car to an independant.

Like zero response for over a week, despite all the sincere promises and assurances.

Wait out  .  .  .

The sorry saga continues  .  .  .

So I took the car to https://www.vagserviceandrepairs.co.uk/ on Tuesday 3rd July, expecting to have it repaired for/before the 12th July holidays.

I am still waiting  .  .  .

The latest is that they damaged the seal, their words, they "nipped it" during the fitting of the mechatronic unit,

and

that this seal is not available to purchase without the mechatronic unit, and having checked with a most helpful friendly guy at TPS Belfast, this is correct.

therefore

they are waiting to get my old mechatronic unit back, to retrieve the seal off it, and reuse it.

I have asked to be allowed to inspect the seal before it is refitted.

Is it likely to be OK to reuse this seal?

Regards,

Marcus

in my opinion, fresh seal, per removal. nothing good ever came from reuse.

i would have said... looks like your up for another mechatronic unit boys, i'll have that new seal thanks.

Indeed,

though I am not good in those no doubt confrontational situations,

I may strongly suggest/instruct he contacts that outfit (listed somewhere above) that rebuilds the mechatronic unit "bigger, better, stronger, faster", since I can only presume they could supply a seal, seperately.

However, depending on the warranty, if the seal does not leak within 3 months, it should not ever leak?

Well, try to get this 0AM927377 at VW or Audi, or even Skoda

Collected the car Friday past and definately driving 100%,

Craig the boss came over as very genuine and passionate about his craft, showing me and the brother (who drove me up to collect the car )the differences between the wet and dry clutch packs.

He also showed us  the tiny tiny nick on the seal (essentially a giant preformed "O" ring) that caused it to weep.

Paid by credit card, so hopefully some recourse if gremlins appear too soon, but I have no reason to suppose they will.

Now I gotta take another couple of years driving outta the car to recoup my investment.

But, what is due to fail/most likely to fail post 120,000 miles?
